Does anyone know if you can have discovery depositions in criminal cases too?
I am working on a story.

discovery is a crucial part of criminal cases. a criminal defendant is entitled to "discover" what evidence the state has against him, witnesses' names, lab reports, etc. discovery depositions are generally only admissible as evidence in civil trials because of the right to confront witnesses. but if a witness is on his deathbead, about to lose the ability to speak forever, or something similar, then a deposition may be taken and may be admissible so long as the defendant has the right to confront and cross examine.
