Another, "I regret..." post.

I didn't learn much at college (apart from how to learn for exams and forget it all 2 days later) but my social life was great. :)

i whole heartedly agree... i am in debt and have NOTHING to show for my time in college. i would have been far better off getting ANY job right out of highschool... god forbid i ever have a kid, but if i do they will not be forced to go to a money sucking university for a stupid sheet of paper that means NOTHING in the real world.

AMEN
Bomber, we see eye to eye.

My degree was in finance. All it got me was a shit job in a call center answering the phone, and now I am a bank teller. What a joke. I owe more in loans than I make in a year. I should have gone into the electrician apprenticeship right out of highschool.

dude

when I was in college I learned how to eat pussy like a champ. The look on a girls face as shes cumming down her leg was well worth the price of admission. The classes were a joke, but I took a lot from it in lifes lessons and became more aware of who I was. Overall, I love to go back and do it again.

I regret going to college, what a fucking waste of time and money.

Its funny - b/c I regret NOT finishing college...Ive considered going back, but still at 27 - I dont know what I want to be when I grow up

Don't go back, I went back at 25 and what a fucking waste. Big deal, i got a degree. No one in the world cares though, that is the biggest lie known to man. Save your money. I got good grades too, so it is not like I brought this on myself. 20 years ago? yeah you needed college, now it is who you know and being in the right place at the right time.

MP5,

Only you have the power to turn your life around. If you're not happy, do something about it. Don't tell people not to go to college. That's just stupid and you know it.

Send me your resume. I want to have a look. [email protected]

I had posted this on another thread asking the same question. The same answer applies:

You have to enjoy and love what ever it is that you decide to do for a career. Degree or no degree, if you regret the path you have chosen then how can you expect to succeed. It's not the degree that will make the money it's you and what you do with the knowledge that counts. This is why over 68% of graduates do not enter the workforce in there field of study.

Degrees in general can get you in a door or over a level in a company that you would other wise not get past with out one. However, way to many people get a degree in a field that they do not even care for yet they do it based on the assumption of automatically making a lot of money.

Also in today's career market the most important attributes come from job experience and continuing education. Jobs have become so specialized and competition has become so aggressive and fast paced that if you don't continue to educate yourself, you'll stop moving up the latter so to speak.

I (like May) am making a career change now b/c I am at the point in my life were I want to do something that I enjoy and love first, and if the money comes than I will welcome it, but money is not the drive behind what I wish to do.

So if your going to get a degree, do it a field that you have a passion for not to get rich quick. Money is the biggest misconception behind attaining a degree.

MP5,

Do you regret college, or just where you went to college?

MP5 is both wrong and right.

University is more about learning to cope with
responsibility. In high school you were monitored,
in University you are not.
US-system is perticuarly NASTY towards students,
I'll have to admit. A friend of mine went to Harvard
and his tuition+other things was $40 000/year.
I was like......damn!!
In the UK, tuition is roughly $18 000 for international
students. This is for Oxford Uni. btw.
Pretty big difference.

I have to admit though, that I have met an astounding
amunt of very, very shallow, dumb.(you name it) people
that got their positions based on their connections.
Hell, coming from an upper-class family myself I could
get a high-paying job no problem in spain through my
family. But why don't I do this?

Simple really, at the end of the day I want to be able to feel
that it was because of my intelligence that I got to where
I am now. Its called self-worth. And I'm a big believer in
earning my position in life. Respect after all, is earned
NOT given.

Godspeed

I'm glad I got my degree, as it would have been hard to get a job in IT (in the UK) without a degree.

The degree that you did doesn't matter in the eyes of most employers here, but they seem to want one on your CV (resume).

Matt, I regret college period. I really think unless you are going into medical, engineering, or accounting, you don't need a degree.

Kartchick, don't be mad at me cause my morals are higher than yours.

I never regretted going to college. I learned a lot about life, got an English degree and computer skills and that has helped me get well-paying jobs over the years. College isn't for everybody, but a degree can help you move through the ranks of a company. I think when you graduate from high school, you have to really be specific about what you want to do as a career when you pick your major. It's competitive out there in the workforce and a education can give you a step-up -- at least, that's been my experience.

I agree that at least 80% of college is bullshit, but that money sucking piece of paper opens up a lot of job opportunities and a lot more income. It's not right, it's bogus, but thats how it is.

do you think he'd make more, less, or the same amount of money if he didn't go to college?

not only that, I think college is a good way to broaden ones views and opinions, by meeting different kinds of people with different viewpoints. and it can be pretty fun too.

I agree with the meeting people part.. but ALL of the guys I went to HS with that went away to school... I now out-earn.
I do not have a degree.

you forgot to mention homosexuality, herpes and AIDS.

homosexuality is great. its about time that we accept men who are willing to stick their cocks in holes that spew fecal matter every day. release some of your hatred dballer, you will feel sooo much better.

hey that's all good. don't go to college. just make sure you know how to say "would you like fries with that". see you at burger king.

wow! who dug up this post, it is over a year old!

I still regret college. If college were free i would not regret it. It was fun, made a lot of friends, nailed a lot of chicks, got to lift a lot of weights, but the bottom line is, you spend 20k on a four year party only to get out thinking you are ahead of the rest of the world, but the rest of the world does not give a shit. It is a lie, save your money and learn a trade.

I regret being high in University and subsequently dropping out. I don't make a bad living now, but that piece of paper would have meant doing much less work for a much greater income. The sad thing is, I have a higher education than the people I work for and they are still condescending towards me. Serves me right for taking the easy way out.

Bro, I guess it depends on where you are at. I am the only one in my dept branch with a degree! And to reward that i make $.50 more an hour. Big deal, the managers don't even have a degree. You ought to just write on your resume that you have a degree. I have never been asked to provide transcripts before, nor was it even brought up. Once you have a few jobs under your belt they only care about your experience, not your education. If you don't believe me, try it. What do you have to lose?

It's true about the work experience being more important than the degree.

It would be quite interesting to see if I could pull off a resume scam.

I know a few people who have lied on the resumes to gain employment. None of them were ever called on it either.:fro:

The older you get and the higher you move in your field, the more important a degree becomes. not because it means you are smarter but because 1 it shows you have the self discipline to finish. 2 because the managers, ceo, cfo ect have degrees and they don't want to admit that someone without one can do as a good a job. Their is a kind of ol boy attiude. I want to hire people who have a collage education and I will always pay them more to start than a none collage grad.

mp5 have you thought about getting a new job with people of the same qualifications as you? In the near two years I've been with my company I've only met ONE guy without a college degree.

The guy I work for does not have one.... he earns about 1 million a year.

The two largest land developers in GA do not have them.. they have at least 100 million in the bank.

So your welcome to burger king statment could not be farther from the truth.

it depends on your industry and timing.
I know two multimillionaires that didn't even graduate high school - but that was a different era.

if you are starting your own company, or taking over dad's, then you don't need a degree, you just need ambition/drive and common sense with a willingness to learn.

but if you want to get into modern business in certain fields (banking, computers, biotech, etc etc), if you didn't go to college, you will be laughed out of the room.

I personally am glad I went to college. but then again, my college wasn't like most people's definition of college. most people think of it as an excuse to party for 4-6 years while their parents foot the bill for it, and ideally there is a lot of sex in there too... if not, lie about it to the frat brothers. college for me was more like... well, school.
my school has opened a lot of doors for me, but mainly because of what my interests are, where I live, and what I want to do - were I to want to get into land development, it wouldn't mean shit.

wrong. these people are rarities.

yeah i got a degree but it seems to open no doors for me, all the specialist graduate jobs go to the best of the best (ie not me even though i'm pretty smart) and all the other jobs i don't have relevant experience for its a scam. My mate is thick as pigshit and has become an electrican at 16 now at 22 he has over £20000 in the bank and i have a stack of debts so while he goes on three holidays a year i go on none a year
