I have a 1999 IBM thinkpad (laptop) I haven't used it in a long time but I will be using it again. It's currently running on windows 98 I want to replace it with XP but will that work or are the system requirements not enough?

It should be OK

How much memory do you have ?

You need at least 256MB

While not knowing the stats I'd say it's probably not fast enough with enough memory to run windows XP well but I would put Windows 2000 on it. That doesn't require as much to run and your computer will run much better than with 98. XP needs about a 400mhz processor and 128ram to run right. Although it can run with less but performance won't be good. Windows 2000 runs fine on pretty much any computer that's at least a pentium II.

just because you can do something doesn't make it a good idea. That puppy is probably a 300mhz something with 128MB RAM at most. I wouldn't even go Win2K with that.

on a 5 year old laptop?

i've installed xp on a desktop from 1997 with a 233 mhz processor and 64 mb of ram. i used it as a music server in my house for over a year, (ex took it when she left) and never had a hiccup

xp will run fine on the laptop

I put windows 2000 on a 266mhz laptop with 64MB RAM and it ran fine. Much better than it did with 98 on it.

XP will run fine on older stuff - just take the time to disable some unneeded services that chew up both memory and CPU. Search on google - there are some good tweak sites that let you know what services you don't need and how to disable them.

we are talking about Xp here. There is no way you can install Xp in a five year old computer and use it smoothely. And i speak with experience.

No. It will never run any better, it will always be worse. But if u still want to go ahead and do it, do some RAM upgrade. Its pretty cheap. U need atleast 256 mb RAM.

i speak from experience too. xp set to run for best performance in classic mode will easily run on a 5 yr old system if it has 64mb of ram and at least 233 mhz processor

98 sucks ass period. if you're going to use the laptop put xp on it
