An interesting idea I got from a book....

I am reading Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk and there was a great story in it about an extremely wealthy, high society couple that lived their lives in that typical fashion - parties every night, functions every day, brand name everything, on the cutting edge of fashion. Long story short, they began to realize how empty and boring their lives truly were and began to dress "down" as homeless people. Almost like a vacation from life. Going from having a million thoughts on their minds to having to worry about nothing. Getting back to the basics. Going from always being the spotlight to being virtually ignored by the world.

I am seriously considering doing this. I think it would be enlightening. And I don't mean that in the "hippy, tree-hugging, care about others" way. I just think it would be more like a living, breathing experiment.

I was thinking about that when I was in Belize. Someone from the US could go in and say "OMG I couldn't live without this and this and this" from back at home. They could feel like they had a lot less. But to be honest, talking to people there made me realize how much more their priorities are where they should be with family and that sort of thing vs everything being about stuff.

No, no, no. Take that hippy shit outta here. This has NOTHING to do with that bullshit. It is enlightenment beyond that cliche shit

The world already ignores you, hence no change needed on your side

I had a friend who was going to do that. he's like a model type, but he really hated it that girls liked him for his looks lmao. he stopped shaving and showering and dressed in clothes with holes that were dirty, and even had someone lined up to buy his civic which he was either going to replace with nothing or the oldest piece of crap he could find. I think it got old pretty quick. He tried to do it best as he could but it's a tough road. I'm sure you would do it better though, you are killahbee. you'd do it right. normal people's trash wouldn't be bad enough for you to eat, you'd go all out and say "I don't eat that high society trash, give me the trash bin out in the slums, that's all I need. concrete to sleep on, and trash, and my laptop."

So you do away with all the 'finer' things right?

Please... Please Please let that include your computer ;)

You people are way too unimaginative to understand this thread. It has nothing to do with possessions. It is more like the opposite of what most people want (to be famous and powerful and well known and given tons of attention) and that this, in actuality, is the perfect situation.

no, see, i think we all get the concept. what we don't get is how in the world you think you're going to suddenly humble yourself enough to carry this thought through to fruition.

No, you have no idea what the concept is. None. Good thought, you know a lot about me and are obviously a great judge of character.

you would grow so much as a person doing this. I think that fact that everything would be so stripped would force you to just see everything from every other different angle you havent seen yet. Do it.

I am not sure to tell you the truth. I thought his latest was Stranger then Fiction ( a collection of some true short stories, it was alright). JUst saw this in hardcover the other day - it is excellent so far.

I have to run by the mall today anyway (I hate Malls), so I guess I will run into Books-a-Thousand/coffee bar and check it out.

I never expected people to understand. It's better than way.

I understood. Wouldn't it conflict with the type of work that you do? Would you take leave (or even unpaid leave) to fully immerse yourself in this experience?

I'm considering something different. A very dramatic lifestyle change. I've finally found something I'm very passionate about and love to do. Unfortuately, I still need the money made from the job & lifestyle that is slowly wearing me down to make my side project successful. Thus, it will be a few years before I can do it.

nyc - I meant it as more of a thing to do one day. just to experience the other side. not a lifestyle change. I wouldn't expect to change anything about myself. It would be more like a vacation from the life we all wanted.

The reason d'etre of Fight Club, is a radical permanent change. This is not the same, more like a vacation?

it has to do with living without distractions ....what we percieve to be priorities. theres alot of shit in our minds that occupy so much space and time....ever notice when you go on vacation it takes you at least 3 days to calm down enough to start enjoyijng what it is you are doing....then by the 5th or 6th day your so relaxed you can sleep all day on the beach and not think twice about it.

Correct. An escape.

What exactly are you planning to do?

How would this differ from just shutting off the cell phone, computer, palm pilot, and staying inside all weekend?

I'm going to get this book. Any recommendations on books about making a permanent change?

I think the way the book approached is was from a standpoint of how much the world around you changes once you do this. How people ignore you, how you can be completely wacked out and nobody will even blink. It's more a societal thing.

Oh. Similar to how I would ignore a homeless/mentally ill person while walking down 8th avenue.

Is it possible to be completely ignored? I may not have acknowledeged this person, but thoughts about him ran through my mind.

That said, if you think about someone in lieu of actually talking to him are you still ignoring him?

Might get more out of trying to live in the grand style first.
Just my .02 bor.

I have a friend who has as similar perspective.

Dude is a fashion model who's travelled all over for weeks and months at a time. Lived in LA, South Beach, London, Spain, Italy, etc. Been in Cosmo and worked for Calvin Klein but the dude hates the life.

He quit modelling and chose to keep his job as an equipment operator at his uncle's construction company. He's getting married to a less than hot chick who has 2 kids with 2 other guys.

He says, "I don't feel right being paid because I won a genetic lottery." I say, "fuck that, get paid brother, you got your whole life to settle down and grow ugly."

To each their own...

I'm sure you do, bor and you gotta do what makes you happy.

But I don't think your starting point parallels the book from which you got your idea, so I suspect your conclusion might differ. Like I said, my .02.

Oh, definitely. Shit, my starting point as in a different hemisphere than the starting point in the book. But I think there are still a lot of interesting outcomes of this.

He's a good writer.

I do this everyday. It's amazing how differently people will treat you. Your eyes will be opened as to who really appreciates you for YOU. I'm sure you can guess that most won't. Those who do, well, they are priceless.

Putting yourself in or taking yourself out, the parallel life, the you that made it big, the you that failed miserably, what makes me happy, what's really important, who am i going to be today, outward appearance from inward reflection, the act, the superficial you to draw out the superficial them, start with the mind and the body will follow, dissociating the mind to see you yourself through their eyes, their distaste, their prejudice, their bias, their sickness is your sickness, changes to be made, adjust, one door leads to another and so on. A personal experiment that will be misunderstood by others who will more than likely see it as a cry for help or a psychological flaw.

but it seems like you are forcing this, which in my mind equals poser...not that you are bor, but a mentality like this takes more than just a weekend now and then playing make believe, it is a permanent lifestyle. that would mean no exterra, no apt in conneticut, no computer, no fancy job etc...i don't think you are willing to make that commitment,no? because anything short is truely poser
