Falwell: Christianity can save even bin Laden's soul

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell told Florida's Baptist ministers Sunday that even Osama bin Laden's soul could be saved if he converted to Christianity, but he would still deserve to be killed.
``We know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, and then he must be executed,'' Falwell told the Florida Baptist Pastors' Conference. ``We visit prisoners on death row, and some of them are saved, but we believe their sentences should be carried out because they have a debt to society.''
Falwell, pastor of Thomas Roads Baptist Church in Lycnhburg, Va. and founder of the Moral Majority, said he made a mistake when he said that various groups, including feminists, homosexuals and abortion-rights supporters had created a climate of sinfulness that caused God to ``lift the curtain'' of divine protection on America, resulting in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
``I was trying to explain the judgment of God, and I left off the list the most important offender, which is the sleeping church of God,'' Falwell said, according to the Lakeland Ledger. ``I also didn't make clear that no one knows who God will judge, and I got clobbered for it.''
Falwell said it was his 12-year-old grandson who prompted him to apologize for his remarks.
``He said, `Poppy, you screwed up.'''
