American Comedy

I've been listening to Andrew Dice Clay, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Richard Pryor and George Carlin.

I notice that they are actually quite cool and funny, (i put them in order of how much I like them, Carlin is great) but something bothers me.

There's something lame going on in these theatres.

A. The guys come on with the attitude of "I'm a be a funny bastard here". They say things like, "Get outta here" "you know, you know".

B. The crowd acts like a bunch of drunk ass frat boys (which they may or may not be)

C. There is no storyline. Every part of 5 minutes is entirely independant of the rest of the night.

D. They swear a lot. I don't mind swearing, but it should not be the brunt of it.

What I would like to see, is an English or American (as long as he speaks english) comedian who tells a coherent story, that does not seem like it is meant to make people laugh. More satire, less farts and fucks.

Tell me the name of a "sophisticated" American comedian, if there is such a thing. That does not mean he/she has to be politically correct, or calm, or careful, but I'd like it to be more like art, more acting, more storytelling, and less Frat Hazing atmosphere.

Any show or artist come to mind?

Nothing is as NOT funny as a guy trying to be funny.

I like a good actor as a comedian. John Cleese rocks. You don't notice he's trying to be funny.

Look at curling's posts on here. they crack everybody up but he's not even trying.

I like him too I forgot to mention him.
It's so outdated though. I understand he was innovative at the time.

ALL the guys I mentioned are too racial, too sexist, too much about narcotics.

Not that I mind any of that shit personally, I actually like it if they step on toes, but its getting played out.

I want something coherent, sincere, intelligent and varied. I've only seen a handful of shows that fit these criteria in Holland, but so far I've only come up empty looking for English stuff.

I thought he only did sitcoms
and worked with kids?

I know there are some funny ass series I'm looking for a theatre performance

Honestly, no one stands out liek the ones you mentioned did when they were on top of their game.

I'm probably reaching here but..Jamie Foxx maybe. I don't like any of the comedians out now. Actually, if you watch the Comedy Channel, you'll see some funny people on there who as of now are unknowns.

I can't stand stand up comedy though. Way to lame down comedy, making it instant. this immediately puts in a pressure that fucks it up.

Well then, I suggest listen to Carlin while watching the Hot Channel. That way, you get to laugh during masturbation.

I'm not aware of any modern day US "comedians" who fit this criteria. Everything is intended to be as vulgar and offensive as possible. Why? IMHO, it's because we (the vast majority of US citizens) have become de-sensitized to traditional comedy. (do a search on "Lenny Bruce" and read up on him. you can thank him for paving the way for "modern" comedy  )

The only somewhat modern comedian I appreciate is Robin Williams. Yes, he's done his fair share of vulgar comedy, but his big screen stuff balances that out reasonably well. The rest are just mired in the garbage.

Mr. Williams aside, I'm much more appreciative of classic comedy, i.e Abbot & Costello, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplain, etc. (no, I ain't that old, but I'm old) They were true comedians...they were able to make people laugh without having to rely on filth & garbage, and they did it w/o insulting or embarrasing their audience.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a total prude...I still enjoy a good fart joke (et.al.) now & then ;) I just don't think a comedians entire career should revolve around flatulence, sex, race/religion or sexual preferences. The only person who's managed to pull off that gig w/o truly being offensive is Don Rickles. If you like someone who can step on someones toes, Don Rickles is your man. Do a search on his name and "celebrity roasts", you'll find some interesting stuff.

Billy Connolly........the guy is genuiney hilarious. He doesnt even have to try. His shows arent even planned.......he just tells you about what he wants to tell you about.

Bob, download Dave Chappelle - Killing Them Softly

Very few zingers or vulgarity but he'll keep you laughing at Americans the entire time.

He discusses kids, the presidency, girls, his white friends, girls, etc.

Don Rickles

Sarah Silverman

Dennis Leary

Billy Connolly

Jack Dee

Jamie Foxx

Bill Cosby

Peter Kay

Eddie Izzard

Jim Gaffigan

Brian Posehn

These are the names I was advised so far.

Went on a list of shit im downloading...

I got a song by Dennis Leary about how he was an Asshole.

It was pretty cool.

Actually I might read a book later this summer only because it's something I don't think I'll agree with. Maybe grow some understanding for my lesser fellow man.

People are so fucking stupid. I downloaded a billy connolly piece and it was in fact robin williams.

happens with music too. dumb fucks.

umm...chuck palahniuk is not political. he is a nihilist with an awesome sense of humor and incredible writing ability. he was the author of the movie 'fight club'

Yes sorry I remember now the movie script was cool and I remember he wrote the story.

I'm sort of a nihilist. I don't see how you could base a book on that though
