All you Tech Geeks like me... I got refreshed

Every so often we get a Tech refresh here at work on the PC's..
I told them my 450 mhz P.O.S. had to go.
So they say "Go to our Corp Dell agreement site and custom build yourself a new machine".

Well that's like asking the junkie Cop run the narcotics evidence lockup unsupervised.

Not getting any work done was never so much fun...

NICE. How much of a discount do you guys get. We currently get 10% off from Dell. Sometimes 15% but usually 10%

Dell gives us about 15% for employee home purchases and
since this machine is for work, it was about 20% less than buying it without the agreements.

About 95% of our ATM WAN/LAN is still 10/100, but since I'm
on one of the LAB-Data Center subnets, I get 3 of the new 10/100/1000 Gigabit drops.

They still overcharge us as this thing was still $1500 total

Nice system. Please tell me how to acquire one of these "tech refreshes." I'm a contractor at a very large company, and we get stuck with the scraps that the company employess don't use. I blaze along the internet in my bleeding edge circa 1994 p166 with 128 megs of ram running caca dookie win 2000. I've asked my boss several times how I'm expected to stream live porn with a machine this slow, and all he does is write me up and threaten to fire me. I've also asked him to open up certain ports on the firewall so that I can play unreal tournament all night, but I still get the same threats of suspension and pay docking. Well ok then!

Almost forgot this:

Supersodomizeme, Just get hired on as a Company Employee and all those things you mentioned become part of the New Hire
Pkg..

I have a company hand-me-down machine better than that at home
for my 5th grade kid to play her Zoo Tycoon game on...

Contractors the world over get the I.T. scraps.
Unfortunatly they also do the lions share of the work..

Dayum, you went from a skateboard to a Ferrari. $1,500 is pretty good for a system like that from a Name like Dell plus you get their tech and warranties (I think). A no name equivalent still would have ran you at least $1,000. Since I'm thrifty I just go no name or build it myself.

I won't miss that old Gateway-to-Hell I was using.
I could have hugged the Shipping guy when he rolled up with the boxs this morning.

Yea, We get ONSITE next day support from Dell for 2 years.
Likely, the CDVD burner will be the thing with issues from what I hear..
My backup machine is a 233hz Dell Optiplex, and nothing has gone wrong with it in 3 years.

This Biatch is Screamin !!!

what do you use it for? if it is not graphics intensive, that is total overkill.

i have a 1.5 p4 desktop and a 1 p3 laptop. i run sql server/iis/multiple dev environments/browsers/networking services on both, win2k and winxp, and i never have a problem.

I went high because I could.
I'm doing some rendering that used to take hours and keeping multiple database Mgmt interfaces open all day.

Mostly because I know it will be 2 years before I get another desktop machine refresh in this economy.

Damnnn. Lucky Fucker I can't wait to get rid of this HP...Next time my dime purchases another computer I'm building it

Nice setup.....................my company is about to give me a Toshiba Tecra 9100 to use.

P4 1.7 Ghz,
512 RAM
DVD/CD-RW
FireWire input
Wireless NIC and BlueTooth ready

Do you guys use gigabit ethernet in your environment, or are you just getting it tahhh haaaave?

We have small pockets of 1000 subnets for the Labs & Data Center and I am lucky enough to have a few drops in my office..

The other 100,000+ Desktops are still on 10/100 for the most part.
