There are a lot of movies (divX or Xvid) that are splitted into around 50 of those files

Yeah, rar was designed for disk spanning back in the day. You could take a big program, compress it into a bunch of rar files and put each rar on a floppy. Now they do it in 15Mb increments normally for newsgroup use.
