Anyone here currently an active member in the Air Force?? I have a few questions, the website is somewhat vague on information....

what exactly would you like to know about the Air Force reserves? I was in the Marine Corps reserves, and I assume it is pretty much the same deal, more or less

thinking of joining?

Well it seems like they hook you up very nicely....medical insurance, tuition, etc....and I heard if you work for them fulltime after basic training they'll also pay your rent, and I can always take night classes...considering I'm going for my PsyD. I'm going to need alot of money for school :(

You get this if you are ACTIVE DUTY airforce. If you join the reserves you do get tuition assistance. The Army reserves goes up to 100% 1 October. However that's not 100% if you go to Harvard for example. It's a median range. If you get hurt on drill weekend then you are covered medically but that's it. If you are active yes your rent is paid for, but you will be living in dorms. It's not like they will pay for you to live in an apartment unless you are a either a SSGT or higher, but in some cases if their is room in the dorms you will have to stay their. How much they pay you for rent is dependent upon your rank, not how much your apartment cost. Just be aware of the situation thats going on in the Gulf becuase either way you may be effected by it if you are active or reserves. Lots of soldiers/airmen/sailors and marines are deployed and even more reserve units are being activated. My entire reserve unit is either in Germany and the the middle east (they were just called up two weeks ago), I'm still here due to a medical condition so luckily for me I got out of being sent.

bronzed-I thought the military gives a median amount of money for rent if you wanted to live outside of base, because you have a spouse, or a family. yeah you get your base pay, and on top of that, you get like a voucher(bha in the USMC-I think, where's big buck at?), that compensates for you rent. it won't cover all of your rent, but it helps you out indefinitely if you live off base.

ex: some servicemen that I have talked to here in San D have a $1000 voucher for rent because they live off base.

I am pretty sure bout this, but maybe some active duty guys could confirm this... also on top of the rent thing, there is also comrats or something that helps you out with the food, if you dont eat at the chow/mess hall. but anyway...

It depends on where you are stationed. It's called cost of living allowance. If you are married you get paid a certain amount of money for rent. You get more money for places like Hawaii than you would get for Kansas. Since she is single and she will come in as an Airman Basic most likely she WILL NOT be given money to live off base unless she gets married or has a dependent. I am pretty sure about this becuase I live on an Air Force Base although I only truly know about Army regulations but the pay is the same for all services. It goes by your E-grade.

On the food, if you live in the barraks you eat at the chow hall. You only get seperate rations if you live off base/post. That's the same for everyone. Its about 225 dollars. Oh you can get sep. rats if you have a type of job that keeps you away from the d-fac at normal hours.

I was active duty once so I know what I'm talking about as far as the Army goes, and when I switched MOS I was stationed here on Sheppard AFB so I know a little about what the AF goes through becuase of my class mates.

Never been in the AF just Active Army and Army Reserves. On active duty I was a Preventive Medicine Specialist. Only time I actually did my job was when I was deployed to Hungary. I did water testing, STD counseling/contacting, inspected barber shops, tattoo parlors, brothels, dining facilities, gyms and stuff like that. Basically the health department for the army.

My MOS in the army reserves is Biomedical Equipment Repair. I fix all types of medical equipment, from dental chairs to x-ray equipment. The school is here on an AFB that's why I know a little about the airforce. :)
