Aids racial statistics

The 700 Club or something was on while I was cooking, and it was a show about how the aids epidemic is overpowering the African American population. It said that 1 in 50 black men have aids, and 1 in 160 (I think) black women have aids, opposed to 1 in 240 white men, and I didn't hear a statistic on white women. There was also mention of 47% of new cases last year being reported from the African American community. I hit record on my VCR, so I'll review the tape later.


I didn't realize how widespread this disease really is. That's insane. SuperDave, be careful.

is far worse than they think. most peole dont know what HIV is or if they have it in africa. i went to a hospital in south africa, and out of all the pateints i saw (at least in the hundreds) i saw 1 that didnt, he was 13. its more due to their attidutes about sex that their are always increasing no.s of aids patients over there ...there are government programs in place though

In Ethiopia 1 in 3 people have Aids. That's right, I said 1 in 3. Due to the the non education of the public by their government. Usually because of the stigma of dying of aids the deaths will be listed as the aids related complication that killed them instead of the virus that caused it. The majority of the population actually believes that the virus is contracted when a curse is placed on you!

Not surprising though. I assume that the stats are a little skewed due to the VERY, VERY high rates of HIV in third and fourth world countries.

If one were to look at cases here in the US, I would bet that the spread between whites and all other minorities is MUCH closer.

The infection rate among black gay men is much higher than among white gay men at this point. Of course, according to the logic of many users here, which correlates AIDS with certain attitudes, you could draw all sorts of racist conclusions from that.

The fact is that AIDS operates epidemiologically here as it does in the global community. Marginalized people -- whether black Africans or gay Americans -- are its main victims.

I feel pretty bad actually. I was watching a show a couple of weeks ago and it seems that if you are a homosexual black male you have a 50/50 chance with aids. Nobody take this the wrong way please, I honestly feel that this is horrible and not because they're gay or black.

Plifter finally did get something right.
Gay anal intercourse is higher risk than straight vaginal intercourse.
The anal intercourse has blood vessels closer to the surface, and there is no defense mechanism
to protect from infection, so infection is easier.
In straight vaginal intercourse, vaginal fluids are acidic, and help kill some of the virus so
you get some virus in a load, but its not enough to cause infection.
That's why it is so important for gay men to use condoms.
Well, actually everybody, but especially for anal intercourse.
Add to that, anal intercourse is harder on flimsy condoms and break easier, so buy good ones.

A friend of mine is in the Peace Corps in Africa, and he says in many places it is widely held belief that IF YOU HAVE SEX WITH A VIRGIN GIRL, IT CURES HIV. Scary!

Another story from TIME talks of a husband in Africa who beat his wife unconscious and threw her in the street because she as ked him to wear a condom.


African attitudes toward women are conducive to sporeading HIV fast. Widespread prostitution, adultery by men generally accepted..the continent is dying.

This figure could reduced dramatically. Studies are showing that black gays have different attitudes than some others in the gay community regarding this issue. Unfortunately, their ignorance on this issue is what is contributing to their higher infection rate. It isn't a biological difference, its a socialogical one.

You mean he stumbled into an actual truth in the middle of all his horseshit? You're right, the HIV virus in the US carries easier through anal than vaginal intercourse. But the virus strains in Africa a) are in equal numbers in men AND women; b) transmit just as easily from men to women as women to men. And Africa unfortunately is Ground Zero for this disease right now.

That's why queers should live with "Rosie Palm".

AIDS in Africa is getting really, really scary. Even if the protease inhibitor drugs were there for free, how the hell do you treat patients in a country with spotty transportation, electricity or running water? And, it's really on the rise among African-Americans also, for numerous reasons.

well i spoke to a well known gynocoligist over there and

one of the main reasons black men over therewont wear a condom is they feel they are less manly if they do. they routinely bed 5 women a week, any less and they r soing something wrong. many men work away from their families and like matt the skywalker was saying they hire a prozzy to pass the time away, but doing so they can catch HIV. also they may only wear a condom some of the time, as opposed to all of the time, which they percieve as stfill being ok. the doctors dont even tell them they have HIV as they couldnt comprehend it, they would get confused so they say they are 'retrovirus positive'...almost every patient charts i saw (bar one) had RV+ive on it....it really hit home when a doctor showed me a waiting room and stated 'if u r lucky, one of these men is not HIV psitive and there were 10+ guys in there. worse thing is, opporuinistic ingfections get in there (TB, pneumonia etc), the only way these bacterial infections can be treated is by antibiotics. however some bacteria get resistant, which means these guys become walkin breeding grounds for resistant bacterial infections which we now consider benign but were HUGE killers back in the 1900's. its very sad.

its only ground zero because dutch scintists began pissing about with polio vaccinations on apes. thailands just as bad, except they think a new strains started up. the cure also lies in africa. prostitues from a certain village are immune to the HIV. some few gays in the US cannot be harmed by the HIV (the virus cant attack their T-cells) but they are still infectious. the ethiopians (i think) are immune and i think munch up the HIV with their macrophages. BUT when they stop having sex, they beome positive...freaky or what!

vaginal sex is by no means safe though...i think it accounts for 15-20|% of transmission.
