Advice for newbie

Well, in all steroids scare the bejesus outta me! My husband is doing a cycle now with d-bol and primo and is doing very well. I was just curious as to what primo or anavar would do to a woman. I've been working out for about 6 years...just to maintain. I'm 5'4 36 years old and weigh 124 but have this level of body fat (I'm at about 24%) that just won't let go. I've focused more on my diet..I've been doing Atkins for about a month and have already lost about 4 inches and 6 lbs...not too bad considering I have such a sluggish metabolism. My workouts aren't anything to brag about and I know that...I do workout 5 days a week for about 45 minutes a day. Alternate between Tae Bo, Pilates, Step Aerobics, and mild weight training. I know that I've got to lose the fat before the muscle definition will show...but I need some advice. How much aerobics should I be doing, how much weight training, etc? I'm also wanting to know what a "cutting" diet consists of and what are some good fat burning OTC drugs I can try? Ephedra gives me the shakes too bad...does Chromium help? Thanks

By "sluggish metabolism", have you ruled out any type of medical disorder (e.g. thyroid)?

Other than that, most women think they have a sluggish metabolism. The trouble is usually they don't have enough lean body mass, which they've lost through inactivity or too much dieting and cardio. Skipping meals can really slow down your metabolism. On the other hand, eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day will keep your energy levels higher, and you'll burn calories just keeping your stomach busy.

DON't waste your time with "mild weight training"! Train hard and heavy. The same goes for cardio - get out of the "fat-burning zone" and try some interval sprints - the afterburn effect is amazing for fatloss. Your body will not change without sufficient stimulus.

Having more lean muscle mass will raise your metabolism, which'll help burn fat and keep it off for good. Muscle requires calories even at rest. Muscle is denser than fat. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. If you have any concerns about getting "too big", then just stay away from steroids.

The amount of time spent working out varies from person to person, but more is not necessarily better. I work out 4x week, doing 45 min of weights followed by 30 min of cardio. The key is to keep progressively challenging your body without overwhelming it. Your body needs rest to rebuild and come back stronger.

Here's a great site http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html
I especially like the section on "Eating". Look for "Dieting 101".

Thanks...all great info. Yes, I've had everything checked from hormone levels (I'm missing an ovary) to thyroid...just bad genes...he he he. Short and stubby. What are interval sprints? the Atkins diet is actually keeping me on track...6 small meals a day, lots of protein, no refined carbs, I feel great! I don't skip meals...I just think like you said I need to "step up" my workouts. I think my problem is thinking that my 36 year old body will show results like my 21 year old body used to. NOT! Is it true that I need to burn the body fat first before heavy weight training?

I'm 33 and my body is much better now than when I was 21. I'm happy to say my physique just gets better and better each year.

Hi Superwife-I actually live in Rockwall...am joining 24 hour fitness in Mesquite....

Hey JJ Figure...what's your secret...let me in on it :)

I just saw your post on another thread. Don't get a trainer from 24 hour fitness... every one I have met with has no idea how to work with a female that actually wants to build muscle. As far as i can tell all they do is babysit women who are just there for looks...

You are much better off getting help here on a work out and then either working out with your husband or finding a training partner...

I'll be 40 in a few days and I'm better than I've ever been. :D The cool thing is I think there's even more good to come! I started weight training seriously at age 36 (used to do that "mild" weight training myself).

If you have any doubts about the limitations of age, look at this picture of Kelly Nelson, who's pictured here in her 70's. She didn't even start training until her late 50's!

I think the only time someone should concentrate on loosing fat first is if they're really obese and completely new to exercise. You don't fall in either category. As for "heavy" training, I'm talking about using a weight you can lift for approximately 8-10 reps, where those last few reps are a struggle but you can still maintain proper form. As you become more experienced (and your form is good and your tendons, etc have adapted), you can experiment with lower rep-ranges from time to time. Periodic higher rep ranges are good for variety, but the 8-10 range is a good basic one to make progress.

Thanks for all the advice and that pic is great! I refuse to "look" old...he he he...I definately don't feel old. As a matter of fact, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up....maybe a body builder? You guys are great...and you're right superwife...I've learned more on this site in the past couple of days than anywhere else...I'll keep all you guys up to date on the progress...
