I decided to put here all I know about accutane and how I handle it, so here it goes, I hope this info can help others to live and learn…
I started to get acne at the age of 21, I was not the kind of guy with severe oily skin, but when I turned 21 my skin got intolerant with my hormones and thus oily skin appeared in my face. I had an out of control break of acne (big one believe me) and all I could do (because of ignorance) was to start topic medication (all kinds of antibacterial meds in the market). As you could imagine, topic med did not work, the problem was that my acne came from the inside of my skin and no matter how much atibac med I took, I still got the cystic and nodular acne that left me with a lot of scars mostly in my cheeks and around the nose, The medication also gave me dry skin because of the lack of moisture lotion. I have always being a sporty guy, baseball is my passion, thus, I took the sun as it came in training days… bad experience, sweat, sun, dry skin, clogged pores… and the fact that I was young and ignorant.
Then I came to the conclusion that I had to take care of the problem as my life was a living hell (all self steem to the ground and lots of insecurities) So I started to make some research on the acne subject and found Accutane.
After researching as much as I could and asking lots of opinions and doctors, I decided to give it a shot, went to a dermatologist and he gave me this regimen (after proper cholesterol and lipids tests):
Accutane 20mg/pill
Take one pill in the morning after breakfast for a 5 month course.
Moisture your face
Glycerin on your lips
Lots of water
Avoid the sun
If exposed to the sun, use a sun block
And so I took it, It went good , but my acne came back after 4 months (decreased amount by far). I have being on accutane eversince (since I took steroids and that hormone imbalance and extra testosterone flared me up again), cycling it and experimenting with the dosages that best fit my skin.
The dosage of my first approach is low compared to most of the dosages I have seen posted in this forum that almost start at 40 mg a day (double my dosage) It depends on the body weight of the person but I still think that the dosages posted here are exceeded, I’ll explain.
At 20 mg a day dosage you can expect secondary effects such as:
20 days after start.- Dry skin mostly in the arms , lips, face, dry eyes, dry nose. Some report hair loss… I experienced no hair loss whatsoever.
If exposed to the sun: Can you say winkles? The lines of the time in your face mostly will be aggravated because the lack of water and protection that oil gives you, thus exposing to the sun on Accutane is def. a NO NO.
Now I use Accutane on a 3 month on- 2 month off cycle at 20 mg EOD –EO2D BASIS and that gives me the chance to avoid side effects, keep my skin clear of acne and the dosage is very low compared to a 5 month cycle that can screw your lipid profile.
BASIC TIPS:
Always use the real Roche Accutane, all that liquid crap out there won’t work the same.
In the 2 month off I recommend the usage of topic antibacterial such as erythromycin
ON AND OFF .- use a dermatologic soap with ph5 (not to harsh on the skin)
To moisture the face I use Neutrogena Moisturizer twice a day and with a double layer, also, around the eyes I use some gel to keep that area hydratated.
Sun block. I use gel mostly in my face to avoid wrinkles and other pigmentation.
Glycerin Use it as much as you can if you want to keep those lips.
Dry Eye: I use artificial tears (one drop every hour) I use one product called Naturalag Lub by Alcon. I had lasik laser eye surgery, thus, I have to keep my eyes hydratated at all times.
If you have very active sexual life and if you are on Accutane , you may experience some war wounds because of the dryness od the skin… Well what should I tell you… Do not wash that area with soap too often since soap tends to add dryness, moisture a lot and use specific gel or lubricating products for sexual contact.
If you are on steroids you can use Accutane with caution, avoid taking it with orals that are alpha alkilated and thus liver toxic, use liver protectants and detox products, RUN BLOOD TESTS UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION!.
Lasik Eye surgery.- Suspend all accutane intake by 1 month prior and 3 months after your surgery, your eye is a water based system and needs all the water to heal, thus Accutane is a NO NO if you are going to get lasik.
I hope this can help, remember to moisture if you are on accutane to keep your skin healthy. Peace!
