About the Atkins Diet...

Why are so many people in favor of it here? From what i know about it myself, it demonizes carbohydrates and the "insulin response". It puts the body into ketosis - a state that converts fat into energy - but the byproducts of this conversion is a bunch of toxins that the body flushes out thru the urine. This makes the diet diuretic. This causes the body to lose a lot of water weight and more weight due to depleted glycogen stores. Hence the big weight drop in the beginning makes it a good candidate for a "fad diet". I have read some of Atkins' books, and I found a few things of concern. He does the things that "Quaks" and "snake oill sellers" do. He promotes the diet as a kind of "cure all" and disagrees with an established authority ie. The AMA! He also has the gall to say in his books that he has nothing to gain from this - but the dude has his own Center, books, and dietary supplements! I would like a few comments/feedback on this issue. I think Atkins-type diets work well for people who are very overweight and can stick to it. For those who do stick to it, carbs are slowly reintroduced into the diet. After six months or so, users are taking in a more normal diet. So I see nothing wrong with, again, for folks who are very overweight (20% bf or more).

But for active people who lift, excercise on a regular basis, and who want to go from say 12% to 9% or something, it's a disaster. You need carbs to lift, period. There are better ways.

I don't think that many people in here favor it. As far as the
"toxins" go, your confusing Ketosis with Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is the result of insulin-deficient people who have out of control blood sugar levels. It can also occur in alcoholics and people who are in starvation. Ketosis and Ketoacidosis are complete opposites of one another.

The difference is that ketoacidosis is found in a diabetic who has been consuming excessive carbohydrates and as a result has high blood sugar.

The Atkins Diet is based on around 50 years of research that is not only his own, but the combined efforts of others who first dipped into the idea 25 years before most of us in here were born. Its not a "fad" diet by any means. Like i said in my other post. My last visit to the doctor showed that i have good choloesterol (total is 130) and my liver, kidneys, etc. all tested back as being in excellent condition and this is for someone who has been on the diet for 9 months :). I don't see myself keeling over due to any adverse effects.

I've already blown the theory out of the water that i shouldn't stay on Atkins for any longer than 3 months because "it isn't healthy"
