AAS users and "ideal" body size.

I have noticed that when people post what their goal weight is (for appearance rather than sport goals), that it seems to be about the same for most people.

At 6'1" I would ideally like to be about 220-230 lbs, at about 6% b/f. This equates to a Body Mass Index (BMI) of approximatley 30.

I have noticed that if you make adjustments for other people's size that their goal weights end up being in the range of a BMI of 30 too, usually with fat levels being in the 6-10% range.

I concede that many people go beyond their goal once they reach it because juicing seems so addictive. But my point is that when people are smaller their goal weight (in terms of appearance rather than sport) is about the same.

Has anyone else observed this apparent consesus I am observing on what size equates to the ideal in terms of beauty?

Just my 2c.

For all of us with "bigorexia" I would say our ideal weight is always 10-12 pounds heavier than we are currently at no matter how big we get.

Our constant dissatisfaction with our physique is what drives us to higher levels. It's a psychological nightmare and I know I'll never be really happy with how I look.

HansNZ-

I concurr with your hypothesis. When I was a competiting athlete, my goals were strickly for the game, stats, performance relayted. Now I've retired, is strictly towards physique and disposition. I'm 6'2" 237lbs...striving for 250-255 at 10% BF.

It would be interesting to randomly chose some people at a gym to look at pics of guys bodies, with each guy having 3 or 4 pics at various BMIs. I wonder whether the picture they'd nominate of each guy at his most attractive would be the one where his BMI is closest to 30?

Interesting. This would put your BMI at about 32.

Was this the size you originally wanted to be or is this the size you wanted to be when you got close to your goal?

Considering you want to be 10% b/f instead of, say, 6%, this could account for the extra 2 points on your BMI index (which in any case still sits around the 30 mark). In any case, your BMI in terms of lean mass would be spot-on in terms of my theory.

how does 5'10", 235 @ 8% fit in>

That would fall outside the parameters. But I also think that non-BBer observers would consider that "too big" (in terms of sex appeal) based on the appearance I have observed people like in a man. I'd assume that for most women for instance, a BMI of 30 would be at the upper limit of what they like.

From what I have observed people like the look of, a BMI of around 27-29 based on lean weight only (with a low body fat per centage on top of that) seems to be the most appealing.

However, if you are going for a big Body Builder look instead of a more athletic look then that would be an excellent size.

I am not talking about EVERYBODY's tastes here, just what seems to predominate, and the "ideals" that most people seem to post.

Years ago I was 6'3" just around 250 at 10% BF. It was too big for my liking. Being in business it's just a bit too intimidating for a lot of people and takes away from presentation (they lose track of the conversation and think of you as some type of beast - particularly bad when one wouldn't mind getting a promotion from an intellectual mid-50's blue blood type as they have difficulty accepting you into their peer group).

I prefer 230 and lean. I'm just above 240 now but should drop down a bit in the next 8 weeks.

This is an older perspective though. For a long time I just wanted to lift that little bit more or be just a bit bigger. Now I think balance is the key.

BMI FORMULA

Take weight in kilograms.

divide by height in metres

then divide by height in metres again = BMI.

For me I am 94kg (207lbs).

divided by my height 1.86m (6'1") = 50.53

divided by my height again (1.86) = 27.2 BMI.

Because you American guys still use a mediaeval set of weights and measures I will provide some conversions for you:

one foot = 12 inches.

one kg = 2.2 lbs. (Someone who is 100kg x 2.2lbs = 220lbs).

one inch = 2.54 cms. (So someone who is 6" tall is 72 inches tall x 2.54 = 1.83 metres).

That's the formula. It is quite easy really. Someone who is 6 feet tall (1.83m) and has a BMI of 30 would weigh 100.5 kg (221lbs).

i.e. 30 x 1.83 x 1.83 = 100.5kg

Best of luck.

when all of your bodyparts flow in perfect hormony thats when you look you best

yes, well it is well known that symmetry is the secret to beauty.

But someone who is a symmetrical muscle boy would look better to me than someone who is symmetrical and a weed, LOL!

I am a little shorter than you. Your ideal weight coincides with mine at 220-230lbs. which is a BMI of around 29.

i was just having this talk with some guys i work out with. we were talking about remembering the first ideal weight we wanted to reach.

mine was a solid 195lbs back in high school. over the years it went up to 210lbs 225lbs and now i'm shooting for 240lbs. i guess when thinking about it like that, i've reached all of my goals.

i always told ppl that i would stop using gear when i reached my ideal weight. i guess i was wrong.

my goal now was for 240lbs. i'm just about a week left in my cycle. however, i only hit 232-235lbs. i can't break through. i wanted to hit 240 and then start my cutting cycle. after that, i told myself never to do a bulking cycle again. cutting only during summers.

i'll see if that holds true.

HansNZ-

I've hung around the 230 mark for the past several years...just recently I decided to bump it up a bit. The biggest I've ever been is 240 @ 18% BF. Just too bloated...but that's when I competed and didn't care how I felt, just how I preformed.

My goal now is 250-255. Since I'm not a competeing BB, I don't feel the need to get below 10%. Mainly cause I don't want to restrict my diet that much. But this is a very interesting topic you brought to the board. I told some buds of mine in the gym abou tit and they're going to check it out.

Thanks bro!

I don't consider BMI to be of any use in bodybuilding, since it doesn't take body composition in account.I think it is a valuable asset to screen malnutrition , overweight or obesity ( and its degrees), in the general population, as one of multiple issues to be considered when assessing one's health status. But strictly reading the BMI charts, we would all be obese people.
BMI
below 19 - underweight
19- to 24,9 - normal
25 to 29,9 - overweight
30 to 34,9 - obesity first degree
35 to 39,9 - obesity second degree
above 40 - obesity third degree ( high morbidity)

If you are, say, 1,70m tall, you can be 100 kgs and 6% BF or 100kgs and 25%BF that your BMI will be the same.

Rio, if you re-read my posts you will see that I specified a BMI of 30 with a body fat range of 6-10%.
