a true American A-Hole. being a good leader also involves determining what is the best priority at the time. he's sounds like the type of guy who would commit his men to a bad situation and get them killed for no reason, you gotta know when to back down too.

He should have stayed at home.

I don't know what parent out there wouldn't agree.

More selfish than anything else... IMO.

He knows that he is part of something greater than himself. How is that selfish? WTF? He seems like the type of guy that would sacrifice himself for his men.

He's selfish becuase he's leaving his wife (and son) to deal with this alone.

I think you have it backwards, he's the kind of guy who would sacrifice his men to save his ass. He's not taking care of who he should be, just looking out for himself.

Hey guys... take it easy here... I mean, could you imagine the American's fighting a war without Major Hal Sellers?!?!?!

Shit... as soon as Sadam found that Hal wasn't comin' his way... he'd probably show us where all his nukes are, then tell us to go fuck ourselves. And we'd just have to sit there and take it.

Hal just done saved all our asses.

HE BETTER PRAY, FOR HIS SON'S SAKE, THAT NO MEXICAN BABIES NEED ANY HEARTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. HIS SON WILL DIE IF SO!!!

tough call

his men wouldnt be used (one assumes) to a new commander and as a result may end up having their lives put on the line.....while the deaths wouldnt be his fault his being there may genuinely save troops lives

i doubt his sacrifice was for his country, but more for the lives of the men he commands. i guess its a commanders burden, the same reason they will make sure their men eat first etc and all that stuff.

perhaps not a true american, or even a hero, just someone who by the sounds of it made a very tough choice. if it was for the reasons i thought of, much respect and sorrow to him

sounds like he's an XO, so not directly over any of the men.

plus the whole military chain-of-command and training, they'll follow the orders given them, esp. in the Marines....

This man is a grade A asshole. For him to leave his flesh and blood, which should have the greatest value to him, for military service to fight in a war that has little value in protecting our nation is one of the lowest actions I can think of.

He is simply following orders, like a good mindless drone. His value to society is no greater than that of cattle.

Besides, he's only 4 months old. I'm sure it would've been different if it was his 10 year old son. That baby probably has spent his entire life in a hospital room. Not like he got really attached to it or anything. If you really think about it.

Oh

My

God!

I would have comments on some other stuff you said, but that last paragraph...

I'm sure knows the kid is toast. If he doesn't leave now, he'll be sitting at home to grieve 24/7, and on top of that ... he won't even get the same paycheck anymore. Not to menion fucked career-wise. He won't be helping anyone by staying back.

Lots of soldiers get bad news when they're overseas on family tragedies. What can they do? Just catch the next US Airways flght back home from Afghanistan? They just gotta keep up their spirits and put country first is what they're told. Pretend their mind is in a whole new universe away from that reality. Deal with the horror later when they're in a better mental state.

I'd like to se you take that stance if you were in that position.

This post displays the epitome of IRRATIONAL selfishness and disregard for human virtue.

He does, indeed, need to go to war. Hopefully he will take a bullet, shielding a better man than himself.

So, I guess all the Military Women that left their kids here during DStorm were bad Mothers ?

How is this Selfish ?
If he said No to his duty and stayed, THAT would be selfish IMO..

If he "by choice" spent all of his time working or playing golf instead of spending time with his family, that would be a poor father IMO.

Yes, I do believe that leaving your children behind, in order to fight battles that have nothing to do with protection of rational self-interests, defines one as a bad parent. If you are not protecting your self-interests: person, family, friends, then what the fuck are you fighting for? To die for someone else, whom you have no bond with? Is that rational? If you wish to be a soldier, have the decency not to have children. This is why the concept of professional soldier was not what our founders wished to have. Being a tool for the ends of others is not rational.

His DUTY?!?!?! What duty does he have to others save himself and his family???? Is he simply cattle to be corraled and fed to the slaughter for another's agenda?? A man fights for his country not because he is told, but to protect his own interests, not the interests of strangers. If the reasoning shows that it is in his self-interest to fight then he must fight, but there is nothing in this man's RATIONAL interests to leave his family. His career? A paycheck? Is this man that pathetic that all his life is worth is to be paid to kill or die?

This is why the military does not want thinking men, but calculating followers. This is perfect example of the evil of altruism.
