How do you guys like it?
I've thought about working there, too.
I bet, if you're in delivery, you keep yourself pretty fit with the work alone, huh?
Seems like the perfect gig for a lifter. I'm actually a computer geek, myself. But, I'm getting a bit sick of it, as the raises are non-existent and the market is saturated.
About what kind of salaries do you guys get? (if ya dont' mind
)
I did some moonlighting there about 10 years ago. I was a "loader", which was only a temporary, holiday position for me at that time. Bro, it is
BRUTAL WORK, let me tell you!! They would only offer 4 hour shifts, because it was so damn exhausting. The packages come down an assembly line, and right into the back of the trailer you are inside, and they NEVER stop. You have to
constantly lift. Imagine doing light to semi-heavy weight deads for 4 hours straight if you will. Plus, you have to learn how to stack parcels correctly (they will teach you in orientation, but it is still a pisser, to try to do it the way they want it done), which makes it all the more frustrating. I would come to work with shorts & a tank-top on in 20 degree weather, for the 12-4 AM shift no less, and would be soaked in sweat when my shift was through. It is a great company to get into, but only once you get into the Union(at least at the one nearest me). Once you are "in", you don't have to bust ass as hard, plus you have great bennys as well. Also, you can take a zip code test, and move up to a position one level up from loader/unloader. Sorter maybe. Not as much lifting, plus they bump your pay by another $1/hr. As I said though, this was 10 years ago, and I'm not sure how things have changed, if at all.
Loaders at that time started at $8/hour. Thing is though, since you were only alotted a 4 hr. shift, it basically worked out to minimum friggin wage at 40 hrs per week, in only 20 hrs. For my money, I'd rather have the shitty minimum-wage job, and save my back. Working there started to effect my workouts immediately. No way was I going near heavy squats or deads, after a brutal night in the hub, that's for sure! At the lower-level postitons at UPS, the only benefit to working there is the Union, once you get in. As I said though, you can take their zip code test, and move up to sorter, which requires less lifting. The UPS nearest me, had a strict policy of only hiring from within. Meaning that every guy there(who started at that Hub) had at one time, worked as a loader. Alot of opportunity, if you can gut it out.
