A job that pays, or a job you love...?

MP5

I quit my job in September because it sucked and my department was getting phased out. Perfect timing cause it was right before hunting season, and i was also getting back surgery.

Here's the deal, i have an interview with another bank where i would be doing loans and running a portfolio of around 1000 clients. Good base pay plus commision. But...I have also been talking to a guy that owns a permier hunting clothing company. They are set to go public soon. Job description is fuzzy, but it would be along the lines of hooking up business through major hunting outfitters in this country. I would be rubbing elbows with the biggest names in the hunting industry. He asked me today if i was ready to get a job involving hunting (which is my livelyhood).
I am meeting with him on Monday to iron out the details and discuss pay.

Problem is, my family is so down on me for taking a job that is not directly finance. So urked that i would take a job that is not in my degree field. I am 31 years old, so it does not matter what they think, but i still have to fucking hear about it and have them rain on my parade. What do you all think? Job is not real structured and i would not have a technical title like at the bank being a "loan officer". Or i can take a job at a major corporation make better money, but not give a shit about it. My dad and brother both make over 6 figures a year so it is hard to convince them of anything.

i would say live a little, take a chance with the uncertain job that you will love, and if it falls through you still have your degree to fall back on

I agree with Darktooth. Honestly, too many people in this world have jobs just for the money. And for what? So they can be miserable everyday at work? How fun is that?

Seriously, pick something that you love. You will generally always enjoy going to work. To me, it is better to live your life with less money when you are happy then to make more when you are not. What's the point of having money if you are miserable and don't know what to do with yourself?

It just sucks when you make up your mind, and then your family comes down on you and you wonder if you are making the right decision. I have no kids, no major bills other than rent and student loans. My parents should get it by now, my house is full of gameheads and all i do all year is plan my next falls hunt.

But you said it yourself...you are 31 yrs. old. You aren't living to make your parents happy. So what if they come down on you. You are only supporting yourself...and you can do what you please. It's not like you are making a horrible decision...you are picking a job that you like over one that you don't. What's the sin in that...being happy??? I don't think so.

if you knew my brother and dad, my god! They both have jobs they hate, so they think everyone else should too. I have to admit, i am envious of the money they make, but i cannot imagine doing a job in a field i am interested in. Like i give two shits about mortgages!

You only live once, enjoy the time you got. Meanwhile, who knows how that new company will do...It everything goes well, by the time you your dad's age, you can be making 7 figures.

i am the black sheep in the family. I have always done my own thing. That is why i have to fucking hear about it all of the time. I dropped out of college the first time to be a ski bum! I tried to tell my dad about the company going public etc, and how it would be a good time to get in. He said unless they are going to make me the CEO, then don't take it!

I guess it comes down to what's easier to live with- a job you hate, or the disapproval of your family. Not an easy decision.

that is the problem, my family is very vocal with their opinions. I actually almost went to blows with my brother last year over his attitude. He got scared and we did not speak for awhile.

Well...for the last 15 years my job(s) have supported my theatre habit.......hopefully that is about to change....it is VERY difficult not to follow what your heart tells you to do......sooner or later you will listen to the voice.....

I'd have to have a job that I love. If it's something that I hate doing, then I don't think I could last there for a long period of time. I'm going into journalism, and until I get further along into it, the pay is probably going to suck. But hey, I love doing it.

Go with your heart. I believe you already know what you want to do and banking is not it. I'd much rather enjoy what I am doing than trying to drag myself to a job I hated. If you pick the new company job, work it like it has never been worked before. Be totally committed to it and treat your customers as though they are the only customers you have. Word gets around fast in the business world and they will tell their contacts about you. Your customers will open more doors than you can by yourself. Forget what your parents and friends are saying. You have your own life and you need to move on with it. Your family will accept it sooner or later. Just be happy at what you are doing.

Screw the bank shit and all that stress-you'll be a better, happier person in the end. Plus, you have a major upside in that hunting job if it turns out to be successful; much more challenging too than sitting at a desk all day!

I enjoy my work; it's challenging, creative and pays well.

If you have a choice, life is too short to be doing things that cause you misery.

Fuck the money(unless its a HUGE difference), I work at a job that I absoulty hate and it affects my attitude outside of work.

I hated my last bank job so bad that i got high blood pressure. I would get like 40 fucking voice messages a day from people with pending loans. On top of my cunt boss giving our dept. bullshit assignments, and wading through 50 emails! I just need a fucking break. I couldn't even take a morning break cause i would get back to my desk and be further behind. I would take a piss and come back and have 4 new voice mail. I remember in the morning i would get there on time, but i would just sit in my truck dreading going inside. Sometimes it would make me late and i would then get shit for it and just shake my head. That fucking place was the worst, i would rather work at Wendy's.

Ever had one?

MP5 Follow your heart.

i'd go with the job you love, but that is just me. Would you rather drive to a job you can't stand in a luxury sedan or drive to a job you love in a toyota? I'd choose the latter because life is short (the average person only lives about 24,000 days) and money doesn't buy happiness after a point.

Money never buys happiness. It just covers up:

1. one's own inadequacies

2. the real misery of one's life (note covers, not eliminates)

Money only buys convenience and comfort. Comfort is nice but after a while is taken for granted and weakens resolve. Convenience will get you more time to yourslef, but that is absolutely useless if you have noithing of substance to fill it with.

People chasing dollars almost always do not have any idea what they are asking for.

You have a better chance of being successfull at something you enjoy.

Exactly.

Take this opportunity to acquire knowledge about the industry, then turn that knowledge into something more profitable.

And if anyone gives you any grief over it, well, lock them in some safes and toss them into the ocean.

You know what I think dude..

It is hard to get by being broke.. but being depressed is a hell of alot worse.

you are not a greedy person so...

Get a job you love and find a way to make a fortune at it. Then buy a huge house in Idaho and invite a ton of hot chicks to live with you, buy a race car and dirt bikes.. and you will be set.

Bro I've read numerous posts from you about how badly you hated your old job...my guess would be this is the big man giving you a second chance to find something you want to do, hell if this company takes off you are on a personal level with the owners which is always a good thing for the future.....I say take the hunting job! It's about happiness, not money.

It's obvious you want to take the hunting job. So quit fucking around and do it. You're lucky you've found something you really enjoy, not many people can say the same.

Two thing to consider
1) Money matters, it eases everthing. I'm not saying it will make you happy, but you need money to live and the more you have the easier life goes.
2) Sometimes when you do something you love for a living you might end up hating it because you have to do it.
