A gun-owning society is a free society

Well, well, well, it looks like absolute hardgainer has finally joined the right-wing, redneck, gun-touting, militia-loving whatever-they're-called and decided to open his mouth in FAVOUR (!!!) of gun ownership.

What is this pink-ass, liberal punk doing on this side of the debate you may wonder...?

Well, consider this:

If all the Jews in Germany would have been gun owners in 1933 how could history possibly have been different?
Add to that, all the communists, socialists, social democrats, unionists, gays, gypsies and other groups who were persecuted by the nazis, they could have certainly done well with a bit more firepower.

How about those Chinese students at Tienamen square? Those AK-47's would surely have been handy then.

The point to this is that: An armed society is a free society - not free from violence and murder, no. BUT, it is free from an oppressive regime that is trying to repress it.

Gun-ownership has an upside and a downside to it. The more guns society has at its disposal the more guns will be used for violence and murder by less desirable elements of that society. At the same time, the more guns a society has at its disposal the less opportunity any government has to effectively oppress its members.

The point in the US constitution about a well-armed and regulated militia has merit and does show that the founders of the USA were concerned about the liberty of its citizens and saw it fit to constitutionally enshrine the rights of these citizens to defend themselves, possibly against the very same government that the founders created.

hardgainer (my two cents)

Hard Gainer excellent post on the subject.

I have felt the same over the WWII regarding Germany,
and also about Tianamin Square.

I also am a very good shot and have a good selection to use for a variety of target shooting and hunting rifles.

It is my hobby and my birthright.

Enough said.....

For many, the gun serves as a convenient scapegoat for crime and violence. Apprehending violent criminals, putting the Mafia out of business, halting the heartbreaking epidemic of school shootings, and solving America's huge gang problem are seemingly impossible tasks, but taking guns away from non-violent, law-abiding citizens is safe and manageable. It lets the authorities feel as though they are doing something to solve the nation's crime problem.

Then there are the government bureaucrat types who see family breakdown and the rise of gangs, violence and terrorism, and who feel, "We've got to do something!" In the absence of any real understanding of the core issues, they look to the easy answer of disarming everyone. It's a clean solution, and what's even better, it involves more power for them.

And then, at the very top of the heap, you have the sociopaths, those who want to disarm normal Americans – not to stop criminals, but because they crave power. They know full well that gun control does not prevent crime.

These are the people who think they know what to do with your hard-earned money better than you do, and so subject you to confiscatory taxes. Their egos are so huge that they literally think they know what's best for you. They are very mistrustful of old-fashioned independent Americans who harbor dangerous ideas about freedom, about limited government, about serving God alone, and other such reactionary notions. They just aren't comfortable with the idea of millions of these kinds of Americans keeping and bearing arms.

Right on MP5!!!!!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT ON THIS POINT.

RyanH, why do you like to try to get people to agree with you on this subject.

It is not a subject that should be decided by you or others who don't like guns. It is the law and you had better get used to it.

Sure I could make the world better, but it would be for me, which in your case it would be the same thing. Better for you, but not me.

Since I have been on this planet now for 45 years, I think I have gained some knowledge about the world and history has proven that people NEED guns at certain times for self defense.

Enough said.

I think that many of gun advocate's arguments are pretty lame, as well as those arguments of anit-gun people.

I do not think guns should be outlawed because in this country, it would never work. Guns are far too ingrained into this society for prohibition to be successful. I can only imagine what a mess it would be when the military or police would be going door to door to collect everyone's guns, it could literally start a civil war I think.

Excellent points MP5. Here in Ireland gun law is very very tight, but in Northern Ireland it's the reverse, now when Britain pulls out of Northern Ireland and leave's a civil war in it's wake, we the south have to fight the largest legally armed group of civilians in Europe THE FUCKING LOYALIST'S.

A gun-owning society is a dangerous, crime-ridden, reckless society.

Your comparison of the Germans and Chinese owning guns is an inappropriate comparison since the United States is a Democracy. We don't have government officials preventing us from expressing ourselves, and breaking into our homes to take our lives away. Germany, of course, had that problem.

Your right to own guns will continue to be regulated, as it should be. The Second Amendment does not give an unfettered right to own guns. The words "regulated militia" are contained in that clause. The framers therefore intended that matters of firearms be regulated.

The fascination with guns on this board still just amazes me. You'll never use it. You are as likely to use a snake bite serum as you are to use your gun to protect yourself.

We all know that this fascination with guns has to do with a bully, macho personality intent on using guns to give him a false sense of power.

YOU DON'T REALLY NEED YOUR GUN......you're really just searching for a way to prove that you have "power."
