1) Why can't I get in ketosis? I've been on less then 20 carbs for 3 days now.

2) Do you stay in ketosis overnight?? (if i took a sample when I woke up, should i be in ketosis?) if not, how long each morning does it take to get back in?

Thanks.

I had a hard time gettin in the 1st few weeks of ckd. I had last carbup meal saturday nite and were not in keto until wednesday evening. There was a post on how to get faster into keto.
Basically its depleting liver glycogen as fast as possible. Now I actuallt can get into keto in less than a day.
Day after carbup I go out walkin in the morning before 1st meal.
Usuallt fast pase for 1,5h. After walk I take 6 raw eggs or low carb cottage cheese+oil + psyllium husk. 2-3meals later I do my workout, medium intensity 10-12reps. the workout usuallt lasts for 45min to an hour, its important to do large musclegroups to deplete glycogen stores and get into keto. I usually do chest/back. After the workout I do 45-60min cardio or until I smell like shit. Then I definately kno Im in. Good luck buddy, hope it helps.

How are you "taking a sample"? With ketostix? Or a glucose meter? The latter is the only reliable method of knowing for sure - the ketostix are notoriously unreliable for a lot of folks.

Ketones will only show up in urine as spillover - thus, if you are active throughout the day (i.e., burning off excess ketones so they don't spill over into your urine)- or if you're drinking a lot of water - you might not show ketones on the sticks.

Some people say they get a metallic taste in their mouth when they hit ketosis (this NEVER happens for me) - but I do notice that my pee takes on a different (by which I mean stronger) smell.

If you are SURE you're not in ketosis - some dietary causes might be: too much protein; not enough fat; underestimating carb intake (watch for hidden carbs); artificial sweetners...

You can also try ramping up cardio sessions to get yourself into ketosis faster. But you should be in ketosis after three days in you are eating under 20 grams of carbs (and provided your fat/protein is at least 65/35). If all else fails, drop protein and bump fat for the first day or two of the cycle - maybe even 80/20 (f/p).

Do you stay in Ketosis overnight? or is it only during the day?

2) is it okay to eat natural peanut butter while on CKD, if so, with what?

Yes - once you're in ketosis - your body continues to burn ketones as fuel until you provide it with glucose (e.g., you stay in ketosis until you eat carbs or excess protein).

Natural peanut butter is okay - but watch the carbs!! Plan your daily calories to allow for the carbs in the peanut butter and you should be fine. As for what to eat it with - I don't know - I just eat it plain by the tablespoon!!

Some people can eat more than 20 grams of carbs a day and stay in ketosis. Everyone is different so you'll have to experiment to find your threshold.

Ketostix are usually avaiable at most pharmacies - usually kept with diabetic supplies, etc., Just ask someone if you can't find them on the shelf.

Its not as important as to how many carbs you eat PER DAY, than it is how many you eat in one sitting. Eating all 20g of carbs in one meal WILL knock you out of ketosis. But eating 4-5g spread over 5-6 meals (30g) will probably NOT knock you out. Also like stryc-9 said, keep the fat intake UP.
