5HTP vs L-tryptophan

I did some research on the net about the two. The thing im curious about is if there are many differences in the conversion of the two products to seratonin. I have read replies that 5htp is inferior, but it doesnt make to much since being on step closes to becoming seratonin. I am also curious because it seems there is alot of praise of the old L tryphtophan supps and you really dont hear alot about 5htp. Basically i am asking the difference in comversion, the biochemical steps it takes, any other chemicals they can turn too, what effecieny they have through the blood brain barrier, and also the concerns of unbound seratonin and its effects on non target areas?? ty

5-hydroxy tryptophan

L-Tryptophan was discontinued cause it was seen as dangerous. Can't remember exactly but dirty extract would cause neurologic problems I think. 5-HTP is safer.

Tryptophan is NOT dangerous. It was discontinued because of death attributed to a bad batch that came out of Japan. Some speculate that more important reason was because of the impending release of the antidepresant Prozac. Tryptophan was as effective, cheaper and over the counter.

I have used both for sleep and even at large doses, 5htp gave me nothing!! L-tryptophan however, was the BOMB!
