4 weeks in on test...need reassurance

Hi guys, been hitting up 250mg/E3D of Test E for about 4 weeks now using AIFM at 3 pumps a day. I have Dbols on hand from a Dbol only 'cycle' I did last year (I know...dumb but I did it and learned from it...). Was contemplating kicking this (my first proper cycle) off with 30 mg a day but held off because I play basketball and the pumps are agony!! Most people say just be patient and stick with the test anyways. I know my gear is real (iranians) because I've started getting the pumps again, and I get hot flushes from time to time, and I'm pretty hot all the time as well.

I'm not seeing much in the way of visible gains though. The scales have gone from 197lbs to 205lbs, but I can't really see where it going (prolly just water. I calculated my calories consumed on an average day and its at about 4,000 cals, 350g protein, 350g carbs, 120 g fats. I eat clean and have a proper meal about every 2-3 hours so it's not my diet. I'm on the intermediate 5x5 method of training, coming into my 8th week of it, going ok, enjoying it somewhat, but the lack of growth is very discouraging. Should I switch back to my old bodypart split (chest/shoulders, legs, back/traps, arms) or stay with the 5x5?

I basically need you guys to either A) reassure me that things will be fine in a week or two and it will kick in and you'll wonder what you were worrying about or B) change your training and watch yourself grow!!

Test can take some people 3-4 weeks to show real gains. Some put on 10-15 lbs in 2 weeks almost all water, then the real gains come in. Take in more protein and keep it up, if it is real, it will start showing.

up your intake of water to keep your kidneys/liver functioning since theyll be working overtime...take pics every 2 wks to see the improvements....can't see them yourself.

You probably need to increase your AIFM. The hot flashes are not a good thing. Try to drink a lot more water, too.

Are you running the Intermediate 5x5 or the periodized version?

You'll feel it way before you see it in the mirror. If it doesn't kick in until 4-6wks you can't expect too much in the way of visible gains yet.

I'm doing the intermediate version. I've added side laterals to my light day and replaced the hyper-extensions with T-bar rows on moderate day, everything else is word for word how it was set out. I drink about 1.5 gallons of water a day, but will try to drink more. Is there a link between the hot flushes and estrogen levels??

Also I don't know if i'm doing too much cardio, I have training for two hours twice a week for basketball and do a light cardio session or two in the gym on a day off just to keep in shape.

I don't know for sure but I've had hot flashes on occasions and always associated them with oestrogen and they've stopped when I've increased my AI dose and upped the water.

The Intermediate 5x5 is a great program but I find that the volume is a little low for my tastes. At week 8 you should be riding the PR train. Are you making PRs on everything every week now?

A couple of things you can do to increase the workload:
Flatten your sets, ie don't have such a big gap between the weight used for the first set as for the final set. This will have you working harder.

Take bigger jumps for the top PR set when you feel it's appropriate rather than the standard 2%, or whatever it is. You should be able to tell when you have some slack to take up and can take a larger increase. Similarly, don't automatically take a big jump if you don't feel you'll make it. The following week should then have some slack.

Fantastic advice, thanks bro appreciate it. Yeah I'm hitting new PRs on all lifts. I feel like I can handle a bit more volume so I'll try that. I recently had to do a triple for a PR and I did 5 reps, weight was hard in previous weeks so I believe it is the gear giving me that extra bump.

This is what being on cycle is all about, besides the extra sex, that is. Week after week you'll be pulling in fresh PRs and feeling that it was no harder than the week before. Enjoy the ride.

ok guys, been talking to a few guys in the gym tonight, they said the 5x5 sounded more of a strength based program (which it is) and I should go with body part splits for the rest of the cycle for hypertrophy. I'm soooooo stuck...I would like to stick with the 5x5 but the body part split which is like a dirty word over on the training forum seems to be a more viable option for packing on some muscle...might not be strong muscle, but I mainly wanted to get some mass out of this cycle.

So what do you guys think? shelf the 5x5 for now and pick it up again after my cycle?? to be honest it does feel more of a strength program because I don't feel like I have gained much mass out of it since starting two months ago : ( but I like the set up and the basic idea behind it all.

Have any of you guys trained using the 5x5 while on gear? Where there any differences in mass/size to when training on a bodypart split?

good advice!

If you've been getting stronger and not growing then you're either not eating enough or burning too much away on cardio, which comes to the same thing. If you want to grow then eat more. Strength athletes might not, by choice, be the most defined in the world but they can rarely be called small.

I'd much more strongly recommend HST or DFHT over a body-part split but try eating more and sticking with the 5x5.
