allows the user to overtake the computer as an administrator?

or allows the user to install Instant Messenger onto a computer which normally doesn't allow programs to be installed?

basically a friend of mine had a program that allowed him full access to his work computer which allowed him to install instant messenger. Now he has a new computer (windows) but lost the program.

20,000 karma for the help I use. Thanks.

if he is not allowed to install any program, he might use http://webmessenger.msn.com/
if it's just an issue with IM, he could try 3rd party sw: http://www.download.com/Trillian/3000-2150-10047473.html?part=dl-trillian&subj=dl&tag=button which i would prefer anyway since you can logon to different messenger networks like aim, icq, yahoo at the same time

for becoming admin on a local XP machine, try this: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm . You will have to have a floppy or cd drive in you machine though.

Interesting.

I think he said right now he couldn't use any IM program, regardless if it is server based or installed on the computer.

the link you provided might be useful. I emailed him and we will see if any of those work. Karma to you if so.

There are several trojan horses for Windows that will let someone run a irc server on your pc http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-20391.html

most likely his pc is behind a firewall. i cannot use webmessenger at work either because the company runs a proxy between the corporate lan and the internet and it permits only HTTP(S) traffic on ports 80 and 443. you can enable the im client to use an HTTP proxy and then it works behind this type of proxy.
it would be easier if it is a SOCKS proxy, but one has to configure that on the client software too.
one can find out if the co is using a proxy by looking in the IE network settings .
if it is a firewall issue like he has a direct (maybe NATed) connection, but the fw blocks certain ports then he will be out of luck. even if the messenger software is server-based, the actual messaging is still done on the client (in a java applet in most cases), its only that there is no need for an install routine.

He had a program that allowed him to "become the administrator" on his computer which worked fine, but the idiot didn't make a backup of it and lost it.

I'll read these posts more in depth tonight when I get home.

i would help you but its going to cost you more than 20 large.

let me know when you have a serious offer.

I am not falling for that again. Remember the ole "I need help with this electrical wiring" thread I made? Jerk.

No, I am computer savvy for the most part. The configuring administrator privledges and networking may be above me, but at least I'd know to make a backup of a useful program.

I just need for his IM to work again so that I can kill time during the day and not have to read yall's useless threads.
