How fast does the earth spin on its axis and what is the term for someone who is self learning and teaches themself from reading books. I thought of these today while I was day dreaming in class. Any answers are appreciated.

SO AT THE EQUATOR, A POINT ON THE EARTHS SURFACE HAS A LINEAR VELOCITY OF 1762 KM/HR, OR 1101 MILES PER HOUR.

Well I assume you are the answer of the second question since you answered the first...thanks...So we're spinning at 1000mph...What would happen if the earth stopped spinning..you think we would all be jolted forward or wouldnt notice it since we are so small..

WELL, REMEMBER, WE ARE NOT SPINNING AT 1000 MPH, SINCE WE ARE NOT ON THE EQUATOR. THINK OF A GUY AT THE NORTH POLE, HE'S JUST TURNING IN CIRCLES, NOT MOVING AT ALL. MY LATITUDE IS APPROXIMATELY 51 DEGREES NORTH. AT THAT POINT, THE EARTH'S RADIUS IS:
R = 6371KM * COS(51) = 4236 KM
THEREFORE THE CIRCUMFERENCE HERE IS 26615 KM, AND MY VELOCITY IS THEN 693 MILES PER HOUR.
IF THE EARTH STOPPED SPINNING IMMEDIATELY, YES, WE WOULD GO FLYING OFF. BUT IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE EARTH TO DO THAT, IT IS TOO LARGE, AND NOT A RIGID BODY.

Hey now, don't say impossible. It IS possible for the Earth's rotation to suddenly halt, though astronomically unlikely. In that case everything would fly off the Earth at a tangent with a velocity of several hundred miles per hour.
Here's an interesting question, what would happen to the structural integrity of the Earth if it suddenly stopped? The Earth is not a perfectly solid sphere... it is over 70% water and the rest of it is pretty much solid rock and dirt. Under the surface we have a variety of other layers and eventually we reach the core. Would the surface of the Earth itself fly off along with the people? How deep would it go? I think that with such a sudden stop, the entire planet would break down and all parts of it would fly off on tangent lines. It would pretty much look like the planet exploded.
It would be quite a spectacular sight.

It's 12:00pm. The Sun magically turns into a black hole. What effects would this have on the Earth at 12:01pm?
What about at 12:08:20?
24 hours later?
365 days later?

I SAY IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE IT'S ALMOST UNINTELLIGIBLE. WHAT COULD STOP THE ENTIRE EARTH, EVERY MOLECULE, AT ONCE? NO FORCE WE KNOW OF TODAY. EVEN IF THE EARTH WERE TO SLAM INTO ANOTHER PLANET, MOMENTUM WOULD STILL CARRY BITS AND PIECES OFF (EXPLOSION). YOUR OTHER QUESTIONS SEEM TO POINT AT THE EARTH'S, SAY, CORE, STOPPING AT ONCE, AT WHICH POINT THE REST OF THE BITS WOULD ALL FLY OFF/EXPLODE.Warik said:

if the earth stopped spinning, the eartch would be destroyed. the coupled moment that would be required to stop the large mass (earth) would in effect crush the earth. what happens to you at that point doesn't matter.

Unfortunately that would not achieve our goal of a sudden stop that would make everything split to pieces. We'd just have a boring stationary planet - until a few minutes later when the Sun's gravitational pull catches a good hold and we begin a long fun ride!

Yes it's a physics exam... and all the crap you said is right. Some people in my old physics class got scared and thought the black hole would suck up the Earth - lol.
Here are two more cool questions.
Why is "the man was sucked out of the opened airlock" not totally accurate?
If the moon revolves around the Earth, which revolves around the Sun, which revolves around a point in our galaxy, which revolves around a point in the universe - then what does the universe revolve around?
Can a square planet exist?
Can a planet that is 100% water exist?

I would say the Galaxy revolves around Uranus.
A square planet could not exist. For a body of mass to be classified as a planet, it would have to be pretty damn big. It's own gravity would force it into the smallest area possible, which is a sphere. I suppose if it's mass was small enough, it could be any shape, but I don't think it would qualify as a planet at that point, just an asteroid.
Although highly improbable, I supposed a planet could be 100% H20. But I think it would be frozen and not liquid.

A black hole with the same MASS as the sun would be about the size of a very small moon and the temperature of the solar system would rapidly drop until we all froze.
Except for all the cold hearted middle aged bitche housewives driving SUV's. They wouldnt notice anything at all.

Bzzt! Size has no effect on gravitational pull. Two black holes of equal mass with one 10x as large as the other would have the exact same effect on an object the same distance from each of them. =)

Back off the buzzer-
He's saying that since a black hole is more dense, it would have much more gravitational pull than the sun if it were the same "size", as in volume. Like a liter of water weighs more that a liter of styrofoam balls- one is more dense, so in equal volumes, the water would be much heavier.
