How fast does the earth spin on its axis and what is the term for someone who is self learning and teaches themself from reading books. I thought of these today while I was day dreaming in class. Any answers are appreciated.

THEREFORE, THE EARTH'S CIRCUMFERENCE IS 42,292 KILOMETERS. IN 24 HOURS, THAT DISTANCE IS TRAVELED. SO AT THE EQUATOR, A POINT ON THE EARTHS SURFACE HAS A LINEAR VELOCITY OF 1762 KM/HR, OR 1101 MILES PER HOUR.

Here's an interesting question, what would happen to the structural integrity of the Earth if it suddenly stopped? The Earth is not a perfectly solid sphere... it is over 70% water and the rest of it is pretty much solid rock and dirt. Under the surface we have a variety of other layers and eventually we reach the core. Would the surface of the Earth itself fly off along with the people? How deep would it go? I think that with such a sudden stop, the entire planet would break down and all parts of it would fly off on tangent lines. It would pretty much look like the planet exploded.
AGREED..It would be quite a spectacular sight.

It's 12:00pm. The Sun magically turns into a black hole. What effects would this have on the Earth at 12:01pm?
What about at 12:08:20?
24 hours later?
365 days later?

WELL, REMEMBER, WE ARE NOT SPINNING AT 1000 MPH, SINCE WE ARE NOT ON THE EQUATOR. THINK OF A GUY AT THE NORTH POLE, HE'S JUST TURNING IN CIRCLES, NOT MOVING AT ALL. MY LATITUDE IS APPROXIMATELY 51 DEGREES NORTH. AT THAT POINT, THE EARTH'S RADIUS IS:
R = 6371KM * COS(51) = 4236 KM
THEREFORE THE CIRCUMFERENCE HERE IS 26615 KM, AND MY VELOCITY IS THEN 693 MILES PER HOUR.
IF THE EARTH STOPPED SPINNING IMMEDIATELY, YES, WE WOULD GO FLYING OFF. BUT IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE EARTH TO DO THAT, IT IS TOO LARGE, AND NOT A RIGID BODY.

ARE WE ASSUMING THE BLACK HOLE HAS THE SAME MASS AS THE SUN, BUT IS JUST FAR, FAR MORE DENSE? IF SO, THEN VERY LITTLE WOULD HAPPEN TO THE EARTH'S COURSE (THERE WOULD BE MINOR DEVIATIONS DUE TO NONORTHOGONAL PULL). OF COURSE, 8 MINUTES LATER THE SKY WOULD GO OUT
