U.S. Unprepared For Bird Flu Epidemic
Wednesday, October 05, 2005

Bird Flu Vaccine Works in Humans
WASHINGTON — With the United Nations warning that a bird flu pandemic could kill between 5 million and 150 million people worldwide, the Bush administration warned Tuesday that the United States was not immune from the threat.

At a press conference, the president said he was "very concerned about what an avian flu outbreak could mean for the United States," suggesting that military-enforced quarantines may be necessary should the disease arrive in the United States.

Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt told FOX News that the United States was not prepared to handle an outbreak.

"We're not. And no one in the world is," Leavitt said.

Asian nations have slaughtered millions of birds in an effort to contain the avian flu epidemic sweeping through the region's poultry stocks, but the virus continues to infect humans. It has killed 64 people in Asia (search) to date.

Roughly 140 million birds worldwide carry the virus. It moves from wild to domestic birds, which then can infect people with whom they come in contact. So far, the virus has not "jumped" species, meaning that humans have only become infected through contact with a bird carrying the virus. However, as the virus spreads, mutations to the virus can occur that will allow it to spread from person to person. Once the virus can be transmitted among humans, it can become unstoppable. Moreover, because the virus originated in birds, humans have no immunity to it.

don't Freak, Monster. it doesn't transfer person to person. the beef industry will love this.

It has been shown to be able to jump to pigs. And pigs are a lot closer to humans. Also in pigs a virus can combine rna with another virus and we are really F****D. Five million is about right. But on the upside high levels of test has been shown to help fight off virus attacks.

Five million in the world right? That's nothing. Also, take into consideration most of it will occur in third world countries. I read about this two years ago. Still hasn't mutated since. I was worried back then but then I thought about it.

150000000/6000000000 = .025.

If it kills 150 million people worldwide, that is three percent. That is a lot but most won't be in America. Chances are it won't even get that bad. Don't panic.

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

I guess you've never been to the Texas/Mexico border. And birds can fly even fast than Mexicans can swim, which is pretty fast.

Q: What do you call a Mexican that can swim?
A: A Texan

There is no scientific evidence to support the realistic probablity of this happening and it being a geniune serious risk.

I wouldn't sweat it unless people start dying by the masses in foreign countries soon.

I don't know about that. The flu pandemic of 1918 killed about forty million people world wide. And there are a whole bunch more folks in the world now and there are a whole bunch more vectors for transmission.

There's no reason to worry because you can't do anything about it. Except maybe run test.

I mean there's no sceitnfici evidence that indiciates this is a SERIOUS threat like 1 in 5 chance, etc. Even a 1 in 10 chance is something on the line of a national emergency.

Either way, i'm going to simon.com and getting a flu shot tomorrow. :)

is there a flu shot avaiable for this yet???

look on the bright side. the micheal moore anti-bush losers will have something else to complain about for once.

True...I am getting tired of hearing about Bush's poll numbers setting new lows...

You won't like me saying this, but we need it......

Population control.

not yet, but supposedly the scientists who study it say its mutating in a way that may make it capable of human to human transmission.

the bird flu of 1918 (also known as the Spanish flu, although it started in Kansas) infected (i think)1 in 20 people worldwide and killed 1/3 of them. The healthiest people (age 20 to 40) were the hardest hit, because the presence of the virus sent the body's immune systems into overdrive, ripping apart its own cells and causing lungs to fill up with fluid until the victims drowned....

the current bird flu; 136 known cases, 76 deaths, not good odds.
Tamiflu isn't known to 100% effective, it has to be taken within 48 hours, and you will be contagious BEFORE you show any symptoms.
oh yeah and aren't flu vaccines made mostly in chicken eggs? Kill all the chickens... and...
