I think I can remember Pete Rubish in his prime talking about taking 4 plates a side on a barbell split squat so they're definitely key whether you're a bodybuilder or strength athlete
I don't exactly measure my quads because there's no use for taking measurements with powerlifting being my primary focus. My best squat is 330kg in training so I think it's safe to say my legs aren't weak
