i'm sure if we got an honest poll of a competition you would see unique situations from everyone. you can certainly try it but if the guy next to you is on grams of gear then you will be at a disadvantage
I was told years ago by a power lifter who was one of the strongest dudes that I've ever met that you should build consistency at a lower weight then you'll start improving.
