When you stop using it, do you lose all of the gains that you've made while on it? I don't want to use gear if the gains aren't for real.

I am very new to gear and would like some help on what to use. Can someone give me a good stack, that has littel side effects? I know that side effects are inevitable. Thanks for any info.
