Is the snake cognitive of the fact that the hawk may swoop down and eat him?

since man is the creature that can contemplate its own death, i guess the snake has an instinct to avoid the hawk, but doesnt know why.
 
you mean "cognizant" not "cognitive" but I get what you mean. ;-)
 
the answer is: probably not.

it will be aware of various input fed in through its senses...and will respond naturally to avoid something it instinctively knows to be a threat. but it has some awareness, albeit most likely vastly different from our own, and it "understands" that it is in danger, and perhaps "knows" something about the kind of danger.
