Please give an opinion on if including cinnamon with "Alpha lipoic acid" and "Metformin" would be good or bad thing to do for somebody trying to stay or become lean?

Cinnamon Helps Insulin!

Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food! The daily stream of headlines from laboratories around the world is proving the ancient Greek proverb is right on the mark!

Now another kitchen favorite, cinnamon, is becoming the darling of research scientists. In fact, recent discoveries suggest that cinnamon may prevent, or in the very least, delay type II diabetes which commonly develops with age. In earlier laboratory experiments, Richard Anderson and colleagues at the United States Department of Agriculture research labs, showed that cinnamon rekindles the ability of fat cells from type II diabetics to recognize and respond to insulin, increasing their glucose metabolism twenty-fold.

Recently, the USDA research team discovered the active ingredient or extract responsible is a polyphenol called MHCP (methylhydroxy chalcone polymer). Lead scientist Richard Anderson says the extract does not act as a replacement for insulin by binding to the hormone receptor. Experiments have shown that the active ingredient in cinnamon simply makes fat cells more responsive to insulin, ensuring that the "remove glucose" signal is received inside the cell. As a result, cinnamon can help reduce the amount of insulin necessary for glucose metabolism.

According to James A. Duke, Ph.D., a botanist retired from the USDA and author of the CRC Handbook of Medicinal Herbs, "One-eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon (or about 500 mg) triples insulin efficiency." For adults with type II diabetes, 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon per meal may help control healthy blood sugar levels. However, Dr. Duke suggests that diabetics discuss cinnamon's benefits with their doctor.

Metformin, to the contrary, acts by increasing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues (like muscles) to the effects of insulin. In effect, it rejuvenates this response, restoring the effects of glucose and insulin too much younger physiological levels. Although metformin is approved only for use in type II (non insulin dependant) diabetics, I use it with a great deal of success on my type 1 (insulin dependant) diabetic patients as well.
