I'm ar eal heavy sleeper and sometimes in the middle of the night i roll onto my arm. When I wake up the I can't move the damn thing cause the circulation has been cut off for hours. Now usually I don't care but if I worked my arms that day and my whole arm hasn't had any blood in it how are the muscles going to repair? Is this a problem? And whole the hell can I prevent myself from rolling onto my arm?
Need some help.

My arms always do that when I'm sleeping. I love it. I usually slam my arm up against the wall to wake it up. I really don't think it's anything to worry about though.

The top part of my pinky (ya know how there are 3 sections to a finger) went numb last nite from doing fries. The numbness went away (I pinched it really hard to make sure) but its fucking stiff as shit.
As for your arm falling asleep. Try holding onto a pillow or something. I do that so my weight isn't directly placed on my arm. I havn't woken up with my arm asleep so it must work.

Hey guys watch out here. I had this happen to me about 3 years ago and I am still not out of the woods yet. It started by just what you are saying. Then I started to notice my left hand was getting smaller than the other one. After that I started to notice my whole arm was shrinking. I was loosing muscle and fast! I ended up I couldn't even take the lid off of my protein drink with that hand. I went to the doctor and he had me do some kind of electric shock test for my arm (kind of hurt too) Well after he got the results back, he told me I crushed my alner nerve (Can't spell the name of nerve) and he told me I would have to stop lifting!! I about freaked, I said, NO WAY! He wanted to operate on it also, again I said no. I went to therapy for 8 months. When I started going I had a total of 3# of squeezing preasure between my thumb and my pointer finger. The other hand was off the scale at over 30#. You are doing something wrong in the gym. It may be skull crunchers, or hyperextending your elbow while doing curls. What ever it is you better find out quick, or you will lose that hand. I not shit you.

I know a lot of bodybuilders who have this problem.I often wonder why we don't have more nerve problems. It looks like the nerves would get pinched when the muscles get bigger, but what do i know.

Mine usually falls asleep If I put pressure directly on the left elbow when I sleep. I went to the doctor and he said many people suffer from these. There are 2 choices - live with it or have a surgery in which they re-route the nerve up around the elbow via the top of the forearm. He said it would take about 6 weeks to return to full use. I'll live with it. I do notice this arm is a little smaller than my right, but I think this is because the righ arm is dominant. I don't think you can lost the hand like Hotblood said

Spike I am sorry, but you are without a doubt wrong. This is a serious matter. This has been a problem for me for about 4 years now. I did all of this from lifting. It started out by my arm going to sleep all of the time. Then I started to get tingling in my fingers after that my fingers would go numb. This is when I started to lose muscle in my hand and arm. I went to therapy for about 8 months. The doctor told me I either had to stop lifting, or I would end up getting an operation. If I would refuse the operation then my hand would turn into something that is called a Club-Hand. This is when your fingers curl up and make a fist. That is the way they would say also.

ethertek do not take this lightly. You are doing something wrong in the gym. Putting too much pressure on the elbow. If you are getting numbness, or tingling in your fingers you have problems. See a doctor and ask him. There are splints you can wear at night so you cannot bend your elbows. They are uncomfortable, but your arm will not fall asleep. Don't put this off like I did, do something about it.

Hotblood......I do have slightly bad elbows from using heavy weight on a preacher bench. Put I never get tingling in my fingers when I'm awake. It's only maybe once every two week I wake up and my arm is asleep.

I'll take you advice though and monitor it and if it gets bad i'll re-asses my program.

ethertek just a little something I found on the net. This is what happened to me.muscle atrophy in hand & arm
This article submitted by LM on 6/23/99.
Email Address:

I think I'm in trouble. Started having numbness in ulnar nerve area of left hand, which then started to atrophy in March. Also have bi-lateral carpal tunnel, & had release in left hand 4-21-99. I have definite atrophy in thumb area (thenar muscle) and entire palm, all the way up my forearm.(plus achiness and pain up both arms, left worse) Nothing showed on emg for ulnar nerve (back in Jan.), have herniatd disc C6-7, but myelogram last week was ok. Another emg is scheduled 6-28. My neurosurgeon is baffled by sudden onset of the atrophy. My right hand is starting to atrophy in the thenar muscle now, too, but neuro is waiting for more answers before doing the ct release on that one. I read in a previous article that this atrophy is probably permanent. Is that true? I still can't squeeze toothpaste from a tube with my left thumb, and lack of padding in the palm causes some pain when gripping, etc. Because of scheduling conflicts and my upcoming (much anticipated) vacation, I probably won't get the results of the emg until about 3 weeks after I have it done. Can it get much worse in that amount of time? Sorry for the whining, guess I just hope to find some answers, or at least some comfort or commisery. Would like any input or experiences others have had. Thanks.

OK...i believe you now Hotblood....but what are you saying I should do? My arm hasn't fallen asleep for about 2 weeks now.....I think it's because my elbows are slowly healing and I'm not using the preacher bench anymore.

I do not want to scare you, but you honestly have to be careful with this. If your arm is just falling asleep at night this may or may not be a sign of something worse to come. What you really have to look for is your fingers tingling, or going numb. Your hand may seem cold sometimes too. You may even start to lose grip strenght. That mostly starts in the thumb. All I am saying is any of these things are happening to you, get to the doctor. Do not put it off as I did. You will have to go through some therapy for a while, it's not that bad. Before I went to see a doctor about it my hand looked like nothing but a pile of bones. I couldn't even pick up a 25# dumbbel. But guess what, I didn't stop lifting. I just did it a lot smarter. My intensity level in the gym has always been crazy and I could never tell when I was hurting myself. I had to calm it down just a bit and listen to what my body was telling me. Now I think I may be over this, not sure yet though, but I brought my intensity level back up were it use to be. My hand is close to normal now, but it still looks a little funny. I could talk about this all day as you can probably tell, but I will leave it go at that. If you have any more questions though, please ask.
