I am normally a very flexible person but I've noticed my hamstrings/hip flexors in particular getting tighter and tighter to where I have about 1/2 the flexibilty I normally do. I am diligent about stretching but this is starting to worry me.

I feel like my diet is in good order but I am still not taking a multi vit because I cannot find one w/out iodine. Does anyone know of a vit and/or min supplement that might help the stiffness? I'm not talking about regular soreness/tightness. They won't loosen up. Ideas??

Maybe it has something to do with your potassium/sodium ratios?

Skydancer-

Are you drinking enough water?

Also, one thing that's helped my flexibility, especially with my increased training, is getting a massage. I get a full body at the end of the week, and my legs worked on in the middle of the week. The leg massage HURTS, but it helps big time! I don't see how I went so long without having them worked on! I mean, I don't hurt nearly as much as I used to, i'm more flexible, and I recover better from workouts.

I drink at least 6 liters a day...massage once a month...

Its odd to me to have this stiffness - I never got it in my years of dance training. Thats why I think it must be a depletion of some kind that I'm not replacing in my diet.

More help guys/gals....please!

I'm not exactly sure what the ratio should be, but if there is an imbalance of sodium and potassium, then it can cause crampings and tightness. Not sure if this is your problem, but something to look into.

I'll see if I can find out what a healthy ratio is ...

Thanks Caesar - any diet analysis I've had done always shows over the RDA for potassium but I haven't had it checked since I started eating differently (more protein/more meals etc..) in May. Sodium is always either 100% RDA or sometimes double. Not that I put a lot of stock in what the RDA is but its a guideline at least. If you find any sites or anything I can explore - let me know or mail me. Thanks!

ps - I haven't experienced any cramping if that helps...just stiffness that HURTS when I do my normal stretching.

sky -
although stretching can often be addressed as a warm-up, I've found that it might not be the best description following intense resistent training. Say you did you legs yesterday and really hit 'em hard. ...so you've got a bunch of tiny tears throughout the muscles. Well, your body has mechanisms to protect you from yourself and one of those involves tightening/contracting muscle fibres to inhibit overstretching and hence tissue damage. For two days following an intense routine, I tend to be pretty stiff and my rom is substantially reduced. Warm up prior to stretching: it helps. You still need to be mindful of your increased vulnerability during that initial two-day recovery, but your flexibility should return more closely to normal as the days progress....up to your next leg day.

So Jaye - are you saying that due to the vulnerability of the hard muscle training, I may have overstretched and caused further damage? I'm careful to warm up because of my background...whats rom?

I warm up 5-10m to get the blood flowing, stretch briefly, workout than do a more intensive stretch.
