I don't (presently) compete on stage, and like many of the women on this board, I've spent all of my time in the gym trying to build and cut at the same time. Although that worked pretty well for the first year or so, it doesn't work now. I have no interest in trying to sustain BF% lower than 10%. My goal has always been around 12%.

So now that I've started 'gearing' up for mass, I'm looking for some advice on building and cutting cycles. Should I cut before an aas/building cycle? Should I cut after? Is there any consideration for just allowing your body to 'rest' at some point in between cycles so that it has a chance to stabilize. Since we are talking about that fine line of BF% where female hormone production may be affected....?

You'll get nothing but anecdotal answers to that question. There's no 'science' other than lone human guinea pigs to help you out. I think it depends on how much blubber you've got above your goal %bf. If you're more than, say, 6-8% above your goal, you might do better to cut first. But AAS can be an important part of your cutting cycle. The important thing is to make sure when you 'bulk' that you're in a position to gain a few %bf without feeling grossed out when you look in the mirror. So it's really a personal decision.

A break between cycles seems like a good idea. Pro and obsessed Amateur competitive bodybuilders almost never do this (there is only cutting or bulking!). But for mental and physical health (as well as reviving a stalled social life) it makes sense to take a break and just be a 'normal' person for a while. This won't work though if you have a dysmorphic syndrome or eating disorder. Sadly many BB's have one or both of these conditions to varying degrees and find it mentally impossible to take a break. Again it comes down to the individual.

JayeLynn,

If your talking about rest time between cycles I always take 1 to 2 weeks off after a heavy cutting cycle to rest & recoup to let my immune system play cath up then I start heavy again as for AS use I take an average of 3 cycles a year. I began competing and used to do 5 or more shows a year have now cut back to no more than 2 as for regular training you should try 6 to 8 week cycles cutting and bulking cycles with 1 week total rest form training and diet.

jayelynn, ive competed for several years. my last show was in 98. your body can take a beating with all the bulking and cutting. even if your not competing, bb's have a tendency to never be satisfied with their bodies. myself included. as MS says if your going to do a heavy bulking cycle get ready to see some fat. its all part of the cycle. eating and traing heavy, heavy. it really is the only way to put on mass. last year i did a very heavy cycle and bulked up to 160. today im about 145. i put on alot of good size but it took alot to get rid of the fat. im really still working on it. i thinking bulking then cutting up is alot better for you. you have alot more energy and strength to train heavy. then you can gradually cut back everything little by little. even add some equipose or primo, clen whatever will help you cut up and remain hard. and female hormones well you know how that is. be prepared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck

It's a good thing you don't have to do too much posting these days. Seems your 'skills' are required elsewhere for the remainder of you wife's Sus cycle. How do you find time to even read the posts, much less reply?!

Well MS, it is shear love of this board - love of the women who dedicate their lives to this "holy grail" of body shaping, that truly inspires me to push the limits of physical endurance, to post where no man has posted before, to stretch the boundaries beyond mere mortal endeavors and contribute what little I can.... for the sake of the board....

I know it's a gray area, artistic license at that. Thankyou all for speaking up. Since I'm reasonably confortable with my current BF, I'm going to embark on a short (~3-4 week) cutting phase with Body Opus to get down a couple% before my building cycle. Instead of stringing it out longer, I'll likely use upcoming business travel and vacation as resting periods so as not to be too radical. ...will keep you posted.
