Some of you already know that I have been out a while due to the fact I have been very ill. My body had completely shut down for a while due to the fact I was not eating enough, (1400 or less cals a day), taking way more T3 than recommended plus other supplements, and overloading in the gym. And after 12 weeks of this, my body said "ENOUGH" and just quit for some time. My thyroid is pretty much non-existant at this point. The doc is putting me on massive vitamin therapy to see if he can't raise my levels naturally without using drugs. Seems I have become way too dependent on my supplements. I have to alter my diet and nutrition along with my exercise til I can get back to functioning normally. I was doing pre-contest for too long wanting to get results fast. Big mistake!!

Here is my question: War Lobo and some of you others seem to be more knowledgeable than I on clean dieting. I need to introduce complex carbs back in (slowly mind you) and get back to natural eating. Can any of you help me out here. My doctor has not much upstairs when it comes to specific nutritional needs for me, so any help is greatly appreciated.

As a disclaimer, as a moderator giving advise, I should have known better, but when you are psychologically determined to be hard, lean, and mean, you go to any extreme. I understand somewhat what anorexics and belimics (sp?) go through. It's more in your head than anything.

Okay Texas. Tell me what your percentages look like now and we can start talking about fulfilling those with whole foods. There are various complex carbs with low glycemic indices. There was also a post on your earlier page whereby some very specific foods were noted....we need to talk to him(?) some more on his knowledge base. I would be happy to work with you one-on-one and we could track your progress/reactions together.

My weight is 133, I am 5'2", and my body fat is 21%. I started out at 24% and 140lbs. Not much of a difference, but I guess my metabolism has completely shut down. I hope that was the percentages you were wanting, if not, then I have exposed myself to the world!!!!! Ugh!!!!

I know what you mean Mrs TG. The best analogy I ever heard was from a guy that wants to be a pro someday soon. He said bodybuilding is just another extreme sport, like base-jumping or skiing off a big cliff and landing in a narrow gully with a 60 degree slope. The only difference is that the thin edge between life and death is happening on the inside. Of course he represents the extreme view in the sport (which I do not agree with), but he made me realize the great risks people will take to achieve their goals when they get carried away.

Did you mention somewhere else that your insulin receptors had stopped working? Sky-rocketing insulin levels after eating? How's the eating going now. Have you damaged more than just your thyroid? What sort of changes in diet and exercise did the Doc recommend? Lots of questions, I know, but I feel a little in the dark.

no, I want to know %protein/%fat/%carbs. I figure that the weight loss routine has become tertiary at this point pending normal function/metabolism. Talk to me about your food triggers...what do you eat when you cheat and how your body responds to it. Do you taper macronutrients throughout the course of the day? What's your ideal pre-workout meal?

Damn if this not a new one for me to deal with. However, Jaye is right in want to know the %'s. One thing you may wish to look in to is some baby foods. You know the stuff in the glass jars. This might be a good way to eat small amounts of easy to digest foods through out the day. I once had a training partner who LOVEed these and dern if I didn't use them now and again. These have less sugar and all the other chemicals you might normally find in other foods. Course nothing beats the fresh stuff, but lets face it, you would have to be cooking 24 7 to get back on track.

On a positive note, I doubt your thyroid has sustained any permanent damage. It will come back on line - just will take some time.

Well, the doc didn't even want to look at my insulin levels. He is bound and determined it is all due to my thyroid. He wants me to up my calories for now to 1800 per day, and bump up my cardio to more than 30 minutes a day. Increase protein, (that is what I have been doing). As far as diet, he wants to see a 40/30/30 ratio. Not realy crazy about that fat ratio, but will get that from flax seed oil and natural peanut butter. It is hard to reprogram the bodybuilding mind into eating differently. I cheated when my sugar cravings got to be too much but not too often. As some of you know I was a peanut M&M addict. I still kept my calories down.

My carbs came from oatmeal in the morning, spinach in the afternoon and fresh vegetables. I tapered my carbs down to none at night. My protein was basically eggs, tuna, and chicken breast. Some protein shakes. Sometimes when I cheated, it was with sugar free, low fat ice cream.

Hope this answers some questions so that I can get more advice.

TG...I have a similar story. I was in a really bad car accident that forced me to stay in intensive care on IV only for nearly 3 weeks.

I went from 225lbs to 170lbs in five weeks. Needless to say..I killed my thyroid which destroyed my insulin levels.which destroyed muscle mass. After being released, my gut grew huge thanks to food being surged to my fat stores. Insulin surges will force food to bypass the liver and be stored as two things..fat and sugar(for ATP).

The thing that worked for me was adding a scoop of cottage cheese or a couple of slices of low fat cheese to my meals.

See..Essential Fatty Acids in a meal fake your insulin levels out. They do not surge which allows the food to stay in the stomach longer.

Also..because of the type of fat(EFA)it gets used for energy immediately as opposed to getting stored.

People forget that cutting out fats from your intake WILL NOT MAKE you lean. It forces the body to burn more carbs...which also forces the body to store more carbs for future energy stores. Your body constantly STORES food because it never knows when more is coming.

40/30/30 works great..but only if that 30% comes from milk, cheese, cottage cheese, flax seed oil..etc..

As much as I hate Muscle Media 2000 now, there was a great article about thryoid/insulin and how to control fat storage by manipulating your hormones thru food.

It's great to hear you up and about....your way cool in my book!!
I've noticed a few raisins in the morning with oatmeal helps me....On low carbs I kinda rely on MCT oil...taste isn't great, but it grows on ya.
Please keep the board updated as much as you can....we are still worried about you, and as always you are in our constant prayers!!!
Don't forget to post updates on the Anabolic Board....I guess I hang out there more....I do try so hard to keep Ranger in line....It's a never ending battle.....but it's worth it!!!!!!

Oh Boy!! Just wait until I tell Mr. Guns that the only remedy is sex 24 hours a day!!!!!

Finally made it to the gym tonight, but only had the energy to lift for about 30 minutes and then did cardio for 25. Makes me so depressed that I cannot do more!!! I am on nothing but vitamins, no e/c/a...nothing!!!! My body is saying whoa!!! I ain't functioning without the stuff!!!! Maybe this is withdrawals...who the heck knows.

Hey there TG. Glad to have you back. I'm sure you'll be ready to go before you know it. A word about the E/C/A 'letdown'. It is tough. I usually have to gradually taper down from 3 servings per day to none. I bet you can't have coffee, or tea. Those items helped me alot to keep the 'z' monster at bay until I could get my sh*$ together. I think soon you will start to really feel the impact that carbs can have on your energy level. You will probably also be able to tell the diff between items according to their content. For example you'll start to prefer one item over another dependant upon how they make you feel (high glycemic, high fiber, vs. low etc.) Keep us posted with as much detail as you care to offer. I am certainly interested to know how all this turns out. Best wishes,
