I've just recently increased my protein intake but I am at a loss as to which powder might be better than another. There are a million to chose from it seems, ranging in type and price and I was wondering if there are some specific ingredients/quality I should be looking at before I purchase. Most I see are branched chain amino acids but what else should I be looking for?

you are lucky, here in norway i have no options, i have to buy the ONE they sell.

but if i could choose i would buy whey, natural flavour..that way i could mix it with water..the stuff im drinking cant be mixed in water...not if i wanna keep it down anyway.

I say go with what you can drink day in and day out. I tried to figure out the one with the highest amino acid profile, highest bioavailibility, etc, etc. If the stuff don't taste decent you wont drink it. At this stage of the game I use Optimum whey. Why?? Because I can tolerate the flavor 2-3 times per day and I get it for about 25$ per 5lb can. 22 g protein per scoop.72 scoops per 5lb can. Hope this helps.

Yeah George, make a deal with the Norwegian goverment, make them see that supplements are NOT dangerous..like they think. thats why most of it is illegal

Thanks WW - thats what I've been doing. Going with the one I can tolerate. Hmmm...I'm going to have to shop around for a 5lb can though. Haven't run across one of those yet!

I get my protein from the ProteinFactory.com
Best stuff you can get. And you can custom make you own. I just stick with the Penta Pro vanilla. Add in some sweetener and yoiur good to go. One thing you must all know, protein tastes like dog do doo. Real protein will never on the top 10 best tasting list. The way most of the "big boys" make their stuff taste good is to add in a hefty amount of maltrodexren (sp?).

Go check out the web sight.... And I see no reason they could no ship over seas.

Q for WonderWoman: does the Optimum have isolate in it or concentrate? Can you share us where it came from? So far I get unflavored >92% instantized whey straight from the manufacturer (NZMP) at about the same $5 per lb. But that's in a 50lb bag. Thanks.

It's those hydrolyzed proteins that have that seem to have the vile taste. This NZMP stuff (alacen 896 WPI) that I have now tastes neutral.

Has anyone tried Nytro Whey from ProSource? It's pretty good, especially the chocolate. I think their website is psferformance.com. They always have one page ads in Flex and M&F. Good prices, too.

One of the reasons I like the Penta Pro is that it combines five different proteins into one mix. A big marketing ploy is to tell you the absorption rate of this protein is better than that protein. When in fact quick absorption of protein into the blood may NOT be the most advantageous method. What I consider ideal is to "trickle" a steady supply of protein throughout the day. This is done by using different types of protein which are broken down at different rates by our bodies. It is some of the same reasoning behind eating five/six meals a day. We remove the wide nutritional swings. By slamming your body with 50 grams of "super absorbing, instantaneous, all powerful protein", you may not be doing yourself any favors and, in fact, may not be able to absorb it all. Is this kind of making sense?

Additionally, at night, I want a very slow absorbing protein to make sure I've got some muscle building blocks while I sleep. Night time is the single most important period for growth. You must make sure your body has the tools it needs. Casinate (sp?) is the slowest absorbing and this is why I will drink a shake right before bed. I'll also take my biggest mineral dose right before bed to maintain proper calcium, magnesium, and potassium ratios.

Just some thoughts to bounce around, cause you can't believe all them advertisements.

Hey there Artemis,
My Opitmum label says,'Ultrafiltered' whey protein concentrate. Also, I recently tried the 'all natural' flavoring called stevia. Can you say YUCK!!! Okay, maybe not that bad but big difference between that and the fake flavor stuff. I've never gotten headaches from the fake stuff so big deal. As the saying goes, "taste is Queen". One of my co-workers sells the Optimum line as a side job, and is doing pretty well. Thats why it's so cheap. Hope this helps.

Thanks WW. Another question for those following this thread: What approximate percentage of your total daily protein intake is coming from these powders? Any guesses? Are list members using these powders because 'real' meats etc. are expensive or of questionable quality, convenience, or some other reason? Merely curious.

During the week I'd guess 50 - 70% of my protein comes from powders for no other reason than convenience. For the last year I've been doing nothing but whole foods and two things result:
1. I don't get enough protein
2. My 'lunch' took up 25% of the refrigerator

On the weekends I do powders more sparingly and would guestimate them at roughly 20%.

Have always used Optimum Whey Protein, but tastes horrible in water. It tastes more like chocolate water. Since milk is out for me, I've found that Isopure tastes better in water.

I pick up my 5 lb tub at a supplement store here in Dallas and I also know some guys back home who will sell it to me for their cost. Look around.

Ditto on that JayeLynn! No way in hell am I going to get even close to 200+ grams of protein per day just eating chicken/beef. I figure on at least 150 grams from drinks. And then I try to slop on another 75 to 100 from foods.

For a long while I actually Did try to get most proteins from 'real' foods. Sardines, salmon, chicken, tuna, and thick-cut slabs of ham, herring for snacks between meals. Yeah!! Worked Great until I developed this reputation, (know what I mean...?) -Always eating *dinner*... and my lunch(es) were all so bulky. (Har!...I also need a second 'fridge) I still eat that way much of the time, but the powder is a good addition. Especially if the lactose is gone, a protein meal doesn't plaque-up one's teeth like carbs can do.

As I had my afternoon protein shake, I was wondering if I relied on the shakes to much, as I was drinking it I read this thread.. and now I don't feel too bad. I weight 160lbs and aim for 160-200+g of protein per day. I would say on average I have 5-6x22g shakes a day. Today will be a little more, likely 8, cause it is pizza and movie night and there isn't a lot of protein in pizza.
