I have questions regarding the time leading right up to the day of a contest. As far as carb depletion and loading and dehydration to get dried out what practices would you all recommend? Also as far as being tanned - would you spend lots of $$ and time in the tanning bed up until the contest or get a self-tanner right before the conteset? If the self-tanner any recommended brands?

Thanks

I'd like to reply to the tanning part of your question.....
it's good to have a little base prior to using products on the skin. My favorite is Jan Tana. I used the Pre Tan Scrub to rid my skin of dead cells, etc. - it exfoliates. Then I use the Show Tan as it's great for getting a smooth tan all over! DON'T FORGET TO WEAR LAYTEX GLOVES WHEN APPLYING! Also, put a towel down on the surface you're standing on, as it will run when applying it.

I tan easily, but I get in the tanning bed a few times prior to using the Jan Tana products.

Most people I know - esp. bodybuilders - like Pro Tan vs Jan Tana. I like Jan Tana products the best!

Good luck on your show! When is it?

Spike, it is hard to work with someone for only 1 week, especially not knowing anything about their history, or the method of their dieting, their bodyweight, bodyfat % and most of all, without being able to take a look at the subject along the way. I will give you some general guidelines for a 200lb subject at 5% bodyfat:

6 meals per day - 50G protein each meal
Sodium - 3000mg daily
Water - 2 Gallons daily
Sat- 300G complex carbs (brown Rice, sweet potato are best choice)
Sun - 200GM
Mon - 100GM
Tue - 50GM

Wednesday morning - Protein only, load up on BCAA's, and circuit train your entire body with very light weight, fast speed of reps. Goal is to squeeze out remaining Glycogen in the muscles, not to traumatize muscle fibers. This will be your last workout.

Post Workout Wednesday:
Protein - same
Take in 75Gms of Carbs first meal and then 50 Gms at each of 4 remaining meals.
Sodium - 2000mgs for the day
start supplementing calcium/magnesium and Potassium.
Water - 2 Gallons

Thursday - 60GMs Carbs each of 6 meals
Sodium - 1000mg
Water - 1.5 Gallons

Friday - 75 Gms Carbs each of 6 meals
if your muscles are not filling up, increase carbs.
Sodium - 750mg
Water - 3/4 gallon by 3pm, then start taking in small sips only, up to the weigh in.
Take a shot of Lasix Friday night to keep your body flushing/ prevent trigger mechanism.
After 3pm you can switch to higher Glycemic dry carbs such as rice cakes for some of your meals. Drop the rice but continue with sweet potatoes.

Saturday Morning
Protein with breakfast meal, then just keep snacking on carbs only up to the weigh in. Add some jelly or honey to your dry carbs.

Good Luck

P.S. Drink about a pint of water just before pumping up.

Thanks for the explanation. I plan to be about what you set the example for. So I don't workout at all on Thursday or Friday? Would you reccomend a test run of this a few weeks prior to the contest or will this pretty much be the standard for anyone? I've been on a ketogenic diet up to this point and will be up until the last week. My carb ups have been from Friday night to Sunday night. On the last week should I skip the weekend carb up until Wednesday before the show or have a carb up on the weekend and again the following Wednesday? During my weekend carb ups now I'm filling out pretty nicely. Thanks for the help.
