As anyone who has had the misfortune of hearing me babble about the greatness of ketogenic diets on this board knows, I love the damn things! I'm throwing out a question to anyone out there who knows anything about timed ketogenic diets (TKD's). The question is, has anybody ever tried a TKD, and if so how do you think it stacks up against a traditional CKD for fat loss+muscle preservation. In the past, I've only done variations of the traditional Anabolic Diet/Body Opus CKD's for muscle gain OR fat loss, but am getting curious about the effectiveness of this alternate incarnation of the ketosis-based diet, purely for a cutting cycle. Any opinions and/or experiences? Anyone?

I have never used the TKD, but I think it would work better than a CKD for people who are extremley carb sensitive. I tend to fill up within 24 hours, and then have a lot of spillover on my carb loads. The TKD would definitely help that, as I would only be using carbs in a controled fashion. The only problem is that psychologically it would be more difficult than the CKD. I look forward to weekends and their flexibility.

OFFTOPIC:
Personally, I think using a CKD and a TKD together would be the perfect low carb approach to weight gain, as you would keep your muscles full and have periodic overfeedings.

I'm actually getting ready to wrap up just such a bulk cycle! I was carbing on the weekends and doing a smaller carb before my midweek workout. And yes, there's no way I would look forward to ditching the weekend carb load. Psychologically, the TKD would be awful, but I may still try it. Anyone else have thoughts on TKD?

I just started my ckd so I don't have too much feedback yet, it's not really that hard for me since I'm used to strict bodybuilding diets over the past years. I do have a question though, I am only going to do a 28hr carb up, so should I start my carb up(after depleation workout) sat night and all day sunday to be good for mon, tue lifting? Instead of doing the typical schedule and do the depleation workout fri, carb up and continue all sat then no carbs on sunday before mon workout? Will a no carb day between carb up and heavy lift screw my muscle energy? Also I'm 180 and I'm doing my weekday cals at bodyweight x 15, is this good for cutting or too much? I am doing cardio 40mins 3x week also. Thanks

I hate giving this kind of answer, but I really can't tell you that. You have to experiment for yourself - experimentation is the hardest part of ketogenic dieting. One thing I can tell you for sure is that if you carb all through Sunday night, you almost certainly will not hit ketosis until sometime Tuesday (don't be surprised if it takes until Wednesday even). However, since you are carbing for a bit over a day, and you want glycogen in you for Monday and Tuesday, carbing on Friday night may not be a good idea. The best thing may be to start carbing (i.e. right after depletion workout) around 2:00pm Saturday. This way, you carb until 6:00pm Sunday (28h) which is the cut-off point recommended by Duchaine for supposedly providing enough energy for the Mon/Tues workouts, without making it too difficult to return to ketosis. If you tell me what type of cardio you do and when, I may be able to give you some more specific guidelines. As for 15 x bodyweight calories, given your activity level and shortened carb-load, it may be enough for weightloss, depending on your metabolism. If not, cut the carb-up down to an even 24h and try less food throughout the week, but I think it should be enough.
