Rippetoe's PP program question

New member
Hi, i consider myself a novice.

I have done 5x5 before and other rips program, but in PP it has chins and pull up instead of rows.

Can i do rows and power clean instead.

Like

M
Squat
Bench/press
Rows/power cleans

So i swith bench and press. And rows and power clean, i do rows monday and PC friday.

Opinion, how could i do better.

Thanks

When I wrote the 3 training chapters in Practical Programming, I did not mean any of the exercises to be set in stone. Change them to reflect your individual needs. I simply used the type of exercise I thought appropriate for the type of training program I was describing.

But if i alter bench and press, then i must alter rows too, but with what ?

I thought i alter deadlift and cleans weekly.

My logic says that i should do bench twice a week and press only once in the middle.

I need advice, thanks.

Czar87: Please post a description of the particular program and page number you are referring to so we know what you are talking about.

i refer to basic novice program it has.
Basic program

M
Squat
Bench/press
Chin-up/pull-ups

W
Squat
press/bench
deadlift

But i wanna do rows instead of chins and pull ups. But bench alters weekly. My question is how i alternate rows. And i thought i alternate deads with power cleans weekly.

Thanks for posting that program. I remember now.

I think I remember that the reason rows and cleans are not part of that novice program goes back to the principal stating that novices need less excercise variation. Do you remember the chart in PP that shows how the need for the need for complexity (or the number of excercises) increases as the trainee progresses from novice through the intermediate stages?

My point is that a true novice program based upon the principals in PP would have EITHER rows OR power cleans if you wanted to subtitute something for chins.

That being said you could always do Rows OR power cleans instead of chins. That's the basic program from SS.

Designing a program with both Rows AND Power Cleans would be more complex, and not necessarily a novice program IMO.

Reading through PP it is my understanding that a program should be tailored to the individual goals. PP states that Cleans and Olympic variants are suited for training speed, power and athletic development for sports. Rows may be more suited for training absolute strength and mass in my opinion.

I understand that both are good, but choosing one depends upon your personal goals.

On the other hand, since the program has you alternating Chins and Pull ups on the Monday workout (workout A), you could alternate Rows and Power Cleans that day. I think this is pretty much what Glenn said in his reply, and I think this answers your original question if that is what you want to do.

Chins and pullups are accessory work in the SS program, where Rows and Cleans are core compound lifts.

What ever you do I would not switch anything out for the deadlifts. You need to keep the deadlifts in workout B to keep increasing your progression.

I hope this helps. I am just repeated my understanding of what it says in PP.

Edited to add: I am assuming that you repeat Monday's workout on Friday and keep alternating.
