Sources Say Drug Bust Connected to Major FL Raid Involving Pro-Athletes

Sources tell CW11 30 NYPD officers are being arrested in connection with a steroid ring involving the use of the substance, considered a narcotic, and possibly its distribution. The officers being sought work in precincts throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island and several are already in police custody.

According to sources the case was developed federally by the Drug Enforcement Agency, which in February launched a major raid in Orlando, Florida, seizing volumes of evidence and arresting its owners. Those files contained names of clients including Scott Schoeneweis of the New York Mets, Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals and boxer Evander Holyfield. Even at that time, authorities indicated more arrests could come.

"Somewhere down the road there may or may not be arrests in this case," Carl Metzger of Orlando's Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation said.

The steroid investigation reached into New York last month in Queens, but no one expected that it would lead to the NYPD.

According to sources, at least 5 weeks ago the NYPD Internal Affairs division was contacted by the DEA. The culmination of their investigation is likely the biggest takedown of NYPD cops in the history of the city.

In addition, sources close to the investigation say the sting includes a high ranking member of the NYPD whose name the CW11 is withholding.

years ago i used to work at a gym and they though being a cop equals a free membership..i guess one of the workers was letting them in and once one gets in the rest follow and word gets out so 20 or so cops would show up at a time and expect to get in...i explained that i could not allow them in without membership/lliability waiver and that the other employee was oversteping his bounds...at first they tried to use the whole "cmmon just this one time" i kept stern and they realized i was being serious one of them resorted to "implied threats", eventually they left.. a few did actually purchase memberships and i did get an appology by one for some of the "implied threats" his co worker made...

I like cops. I know a good amount of them through my job. You gotta respect the job they do. However if they're juicing, It makes me sick that they'd arrect people for drugs of any kind. Hypocritical even though you're talkin apples and oranges. At the very least how can they arrest others for possesion of weed? The cops I know aren't crooked, but they do some shit that isn't so "legit". Mostly drivin drunk or drivin while they're drinkin on there nights off. I've been deployed and stationed in countries where there are no cops or all of the cops are corrupt and those places are pure shitholes. (New York - WABC, October 16, 2007) - Six of New York's finest are being investigated for the improper use of prescriptions to obtain anabolic steroids for personal use, this according to the NYPD.

Paul Browne, an NYPD spokesman, says the police officers, who were not named, were suspected of using steroids for body building.

The officers may face disciplinary action by the NYPD, but Browne does not anticipate that they will be arrested.

A pharmacist connected to the probe has been arrested. Browne says the case stems in part from a state health department investigation into the over-prescribing of steroids.

He says television reports that nearly three dozen officers faced arrest in connection with a steroid ring were "wildly distorted and exaggerated."
