Turkey (the country) and the dilema

If Turkey invades Iraq and starts fucking with the Kurds, that could quite possibly force us to mix it up with Turkey. (yeah, yeah they are a Nato ally) We have been protecting the Kurds for almost 13 years now with no fly zones, etc. So, we more than likely would end up fighting Turkey with them. Turkey hates the Kurds as much as the Palestinians hate the Jews or even more. So this could turn to shit quick, although we will still win it will just take longer and get more people killed.

I posted the same thread.

Firstly, you couldn't be more wrong Chesty. The U.S has tacitly approved the suppression of the Kurds, at times with brutal force by Turkey for decades.

The Kurds mean nothing to the U.S. Turkey is one of the U.S's strongest allies, and the U.S has povided Turkey with billions upon billions of dollars worth of military hardware to make it the most powerful force in NATO outside the US. Hardware which Turkey has used against the Kurds.

The US has done a deal with Turkey. They will not interfere with Turkey suppressing the Kurds......Turkey is too important to the US for that.

Which brings us back to the hypocracy of US foreign policy. Librate Iraq because there is self interest there, but stand back and do nothing where the Kurds are involved because it has nothing to gain by helping the Kurds.

Yep. The absolute predictability of the now-emerging debacle with Turkey was one reason many people questioned whether we weren't, in invading Iraq, going to end up further destabilizing that area of the world.

The Kurds will turn into the next Palestianians...Mark my words this country will be trainingg the Turkmeins(sp?) Turkish/Iraqis consider some 2mil of them live in Iraq to suppress the Kurds from going after them...Plan on it cause reasonable people I know seem speculate that U.S. forces will train a large number of them once all is said and done

I don't know if I am wrong, as what I have heard to this point is that we are considering this possibility.

didn't we support an uprising by the kurds a while back, and then ditch them while they got their asses kicked by the iraqis?

Yes indeed. Right after the end of the Gulf War.

If we were going to defend the Kurds, Turkey never would have sent troops South. Now we all know why Turkey opened its airspace to US planes :)

Well, I don't trust their motives. I think the US truly is helping the Kurds and wants to prevent them from being attacked by the Turks.

This can cause problems any way you slice it.

Big Johnson, you gotta change that avatar! I can't freaking type straight with that box staring at me!

Some of you guys see this all black and white.
Turkey will not go in there to invade northern Iraq and kill & supress Kurds. You are greatly mistaken if you compare the situation to Palestinians vs Israel. Kurds have been living in Turkey for many many years in peace and have every goddamn right as every Turkish citizen. There are and have been many top level gov't ministers, officials and very rich legit businessmen with Kurdish background. What you don't seem understand is Turkey has been fighting with Kurdish terrorists who were in the south east of Turkey and now trying to reorganize in the uncontrolled environment of Northern Iraq.

FYI, the area wher Kurds are mostly concentrated is very poor economically due to its very rough terrain, climate and lack of any sources. It is also true that Turkey couldn't distribute its limited wealth and sources evenly to these areas. So it very was very easy to to make these poor, uneducated people to uprise against the government by the use of force. They were very well armed, harbored and organized by some of our friendly neighbors and supported by some of our "western allies". What was the reason? not too complicated, they did not care about the poor Kurds but they wanted to destabilize that area so that Turkey could not become a major power in that region, a region where everybody wants a piece of it.

As for the billions of $ Turkey received as military aid, it was mostly for the Cold War era when we had to stand guard against big bad Soviets so that our Western allies could sleep well and give them the time to retaliate while we act as a tough buffer zone which would have obviously rolled over by the powerful Soviet war machine. The aid Turkey receives at these times are only a small fraction of what 6 million people Israel gets.

Turkey has already small military groups located in Northern Iraq and it has gone in and out to go after PKK for many years. Unlike others Turkey has no hidden agendas such as to invade Northern Iraq, take over oil fields or erase the Kurdish population.

1- Turkish military forces will not attack or fire a single bullet unless they are attacked.

2- They will be there JUST to control and stop a flood of refugees and pick up anyone who wants to enter for terrorist activities. You should not forget that, in the first Gulf War we've had more than 500.000 people crossing border overnight, just slightly more than we can (or any other nation) can handle. Some of which happened to cross the border for other intentions.

3- Turkey suspects the U.S.-led war could lead to Iraq's disintegration, giving a chance Iraqi Kurds to declare independence which could encourage Turkey's Kurdish separatists. I guess nobody, including us, wants Iraq to separate into small ethnic and religious states each trying to get a piece of oil-rich areas which will cause more problems in the future.

4- Once again, Turkey will not be there to invade Iraq soil and we hope the Northern Iraq kurds will understand this and not forget who saved their asses while they were running away from Saddam forces and who provided shelter and food when nobody gave them a hand. BTW, most top level northern Iraq kurdish officials travel the world by passport issued to them by Turkey and use Turkish ports. Talk about loyalty???
