what to do...

note: this started as a response to louden_swain on this training board thread but turned into something a bit longer than i intended and decided to put here.

well, i used to think a 300lb bench was pretty awesome. now that i can do it, it's nothing. with the sub-cultural aspects of strength/fitness/bodybuilding that i immerse myself into, it's nothing. by the end of the semester, i expect to bench 350 lbs, and by my birthday (1 month or so after the end of the semester) i expect to squat 405 and dealift 475. at least.

but i've been recently thinking that those are, in reality, fairly impressive benchmark goals. i mean, the average person would never expect someone to be able to perform lifts like that. for the past three solid years i've been lifting (since i started), i've been fairly focused on weightlifting. more so than the majority of the people i've seen in the gym. the last option i've come up with is to learn a martial art.

before weightlifting, it was trumpet playing. i did that for a solid 8+ years starting in 5th grade. from the beginning i was fairly absorbed into learning to play the trumpet, but back in highschool i was a hardcore band-geek, a rebel one albeit.

now, i'm thinking i might want to choose something other than weightlifting to focus on starting next semester. don't get me wrong, i won't ever stop lifting weights, but it will lose it place as a main priority (i'm thinking 2, maybe 3 short 20-30 min workouts a week).

starting the fall semester, i've been thinking about what i might focus on next and i've come up with a few options. one is to continue with weightlifting, or more specifically, i would be training with the intent on competing in powerlifting contests. another option i've been contemplating is picking my horn back up and getting in shape to play in a big band (i truely did enjoy playing trumpet and i also really enjoy jazz, which i did play before). the last option i came up with is to learn a martial art. that is something that i have thought about numerous times and also something that i think i can enjoy. as far as which martial art i chose, i am still a bit indecisive, but it will either be ninjitsu (dux ryu), or jujitsu/judo.

i am a bit leaning away from the powerlifting route at the moment for a few reasons. for example, i am reaching a size which is definitely larger than the norm and i already am bigger than i initially set out to be, and i don't necessarily want the natural progression of powerlifting towards getting bigger in order to get stronger.

well, i guess i'm just looking for some insight/advice/input/suggestions/etc on the matter. i consider this somewhat serious as it concerns what i choose to do with my time for the next few years.

Well, I gotta comment on something. Dux Ryu? Frank Dux is a fraud dude. He doesn't know shit. He's been exposed as a fraud(i'll even get the sources if ya need). If you're gonna do MA, stay away from him. The only thing he'll teach you is how to get your ass beat while wearing a Ninja costume.

well, this class isn't taught by frank himself, but it is the only ninjitsu class available to me. i have a friend who is in it and one who was (out because of injury) and both seem to really have fun with it. that is part of what i was going off of.

jesus 2: i think that taking up a GOOD martial art is a great idea. i myself am taking up wing chun right now. there are lots of great aspects to learning a martial art, you get way more disciplined, have a LOT more control/sense of your body/muscles, and you learn something that could one day potentially save your life. also, it makes for pretty damn good cardio. i say fuck the trumpet, learn to kick some ass!

Yeah, take some Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I'm tellin' ya man, Dux Ryu is a sham. Worse then Ashida Kim even.

Dear Jesus:

I think you should go with something that s a combonation of ;

1: being of practical use in almost everyday life.
2: fun for you
3: will possibly make you money

In that case, martial arts is out, because I mean how many times in your life are you going to kick smoeone's ass? You're big enough where I'm sure you don;t get fucked with too often, and if so, I think you may be able to handle yourself just fine. You can always go pro fighter route, but then you have to think about your health too.

Powerlifting..Well, there's more of a reasonable path. You don;t necessarily have to be big to lift big, keep that in mind. But it's not too lucrative a biz.

Trumpet..Hey you may be able to get into some band and make it big (as big as modern pop will let you).

Why not maybe take some professional photos and send them into soem agencies in LA or NYC and look for modeling/acting work?

well, next year i will have aikido, kung fu, dux ninjitsu, tae kwon do, jujitsu, or karate available to me. dux ninjitsu and jujitsu were my picks from that list. maybe it will be jujitsu. after another year i will be graduated from school and have a lot more freedom (read: car) to be able to travel to dojos in other areas...

lol @ burning inside. you say something that will make me money, so i don't think modelling/acting will work. :)
with any route, i don't really expect to make any money, just have some fun.
