Has anyone ever been given Lasix interveniously? Holy shit... I was! Here's an update

A couple of nights ago, the Edema I've been getting from my failing Liver/Kidneys began to absolutely ravage my body. My feet, ankles, and knees were essentially the same size as my quads. My abdomen, dick and, nut sack were also full of fluid. Although my feet/ankles have been swollen for two months... a week ago I had abs and was fairly cut... I didn't recognize my own body anymore. So I triaged myself at the Emergency Department of a really good hospital in our city. Two Physicians immediately examined me... I explained to them everthing that has transpired in the past month in relation to this... I even told them of my AAS use. One of the Doctors(who I dealt with throughout my stay)wanted to pull blood/urine samples and get me started on a diruetic right away, he was alarmed at the serious level of water I was holding. A nurse came into my room, pulled several vials of blood, rigged me up to an IV, and prepared a syringe of Lasix. I asked her "How much Lasix will you be administering?" She replied "20mgs." I told her that I've been using Lasix periodically at 40mg dosages and I find it does very little. She said "Well the injectable Lasix works a little better." She was hardly bullshitting.

The nurse injected the Lasix directly into the line of the IV... my arm got really cold. Then, after about 2 minutes, I said to the nurse "Alright, I have to piss... NOW!" She handed me a green plastic urinal bottle and left the room. I began to piss, but as fast as my Kidneys/bladder were overloading with water... I couldn't get it out fast enough. All of a sudden, it felt as if I was hit in the lower back with a metal pipe. Even though I still needed to, I could piss no longer and began to pass out from the pain. I hit the emergency call button on the wall and fell onto the bed. The nurses came flying in the room to find me lying in a fetal position holding the urinal up to my dick. I laid there in agony for about 10 minutes till my urethra cooperated and I unloaded over a liter of piss. I felt quite a bit better after that.

This is the consensus of my current situation(2 ER Doctors and an Internist)... My Liver is fine, its my Kidneys that are causing me problems. I have whats called Nephronic Syndrome: my Kidneys aren't retaining protein/albumen in my blood... the Liver's putting the protein into the blood but the Kidneys are spilling it into the urine. Having such low protein/albumen in the blood causes a polarization with the way the concentration gradient should be. Thus... water that should remain in the blood, leaks into the surrounding tissue=Edema. All 3 Doctors are almost positive that this dysfuction was NOT caused by AAS use. I told them everything I've used, they researched it... nothing should have effected the Kidneys. I've never used Tren.

I'm scheduled to have a Kidney Biopsy in mid January. To hold me over till then, the ER Doctor prescribed me 20-40mg/Lasix tabs, 20-100mg Aldactone tabs, 10-2.5mg/Thiazide tabs, and a pharmaceutical grade Potassium supplement. I only have to use the Potassium supplement on the days I use the Lasix or the Thiazide diuretics, as Aldactone is Potassium sparing. My legs are still quite swollen, although not nearly as bad as two nights ago. Abs and genitals are nice and tight again.

Now... there are a lot of very smart people on this board. I need your help, in the form of advice.
1.) For the members who have used the a/m diuretics... how do you recommend I use them? Which ones should I use together? Can I be on diuretics ED till January 20th? Is there receptor downgrade with diuretics?

2.) What diet do you recommend I go with while trying to minimize the symptoms of Nephronic Syndrome? High protein, low protein, etc?

I want to resolve this ASA-fuckin-P guys. Send me some love in the form of advice.

Peace,
Scott.

Here's a piece of Fonz's post from my thread last month... the one I had going a day after my Doctor(GP)told me I'd need a Liver transplant because of the AAS I used.

I think your doc is exagerrating a bit.

You will recover.

The liver can actually regrow even when 75% of it is dead.
Your kidneys is what I'm worried about.
Get a creatinine/BUN test and lets see about them.

Fonz

The fucking guy made an accurate diagnosis over the internet! Props to Fonz.

Fonz,
I saw the lab report from two nights ago... my creatinine, BUN, and urea are all normal. So my Kidneys are performing well in some areas, they're just spilling all my protein/albumen into my urine. What do you advise?

Nephrotic Syndrome is usually caused from Diabetes Mellitus, systemic Lupus erythematosus, and amyloidosis. It can also be caused by an array of glomerular diseases (membranous nephropathy, focal glomerulosclerosis, minimal change disease, and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis).

I think the "consensus" from the ER doctors is correct. CAN your GP!!! This is why I mentioned getting a second or third opinion in your original post a few weeks back. Shit, a liver transplant is very fucking serious bro.

Increasing your protein intake will help raise your plasma albumin levels, which should help with your edema. Increasing blood albumin levels will increase the oncotic pressure and circulating blood. However, simply increasing your protein intake does not always lead to an increase in albumin and a positive nitrogen balance because there could be an increase in urinary losses as well. Nephrotic Syndrome usually means that there is a loss of the glomerular barrier to protein; therefore, more protein will be lost in the urine...which leads hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypercoagulability..etc. Try to ingest proteins with a high biological value...egg, whey, etc....There is no set-in-stone protein requirement for N.S....it usually ranges between 0.8 to 1.5 g/kg/day. However, I "might" aim for a level of 0.8 to 1.0 gram/pound BW/day.

Restricting sodium and the use of diuretics is controversial since it can also increase HYPOtension (low blood pressure) and "might" cause a deterioration of renal function. My guess is that your edema is a result of hypoalbuminemia...FIND THE CAUSE OF THIS!

You may want to check for decreased red blood cell productin as well, which is also common in some renal diseased patients. If you are low, then ask to be put on EPO.

Your should definately find out the cause of your Nephrotic Syndrome, which more than likely be a result from any of the conditions listed in my firsT paragraph.

Scotty,
That's scary. I agree with BMJ. The good news is it ain't your liver. To make a conclusion like liver disease just because someone's on AAS or has used them, is intellectual laziness. A lot of that in medicine, esp in the era of managed (mangled) care.
Diet: def high protein; your kidneys are spilling albumin, which reduces the osmotic pressure in the plasma, allowing it to be oversome by hydrostatic pressure, water just leaks thru the capillaries out into the tissue space.
there are many causes for Nephrotic syndrome. And remember, it's a syndrome (collection of signs and symptoms) NOT a distinct disease state. Often the treatment is corticosteroids (aaarrggghhh!) such as Prednisone, but short course.
Diuretics are a bandaid therapy, they won't get to the source. Lasix can have toxicity of its own (hearing loss). Thiazides probably stop casing diuresis after a short period, and drop BP by vasodilation.
You need a work up by a nephrologist, or a least a good, concerned internist. Find the cause! Treating symptoms w/out treating the cause is for the birds.

pardon the ignorance but since its not your liver does that mean that, after the surgery, you'll be fine? if so, thats great to hear. thats one of the reasons why i refuse to see GPs. not that all GPs are bad or that other specialties arent fuck ups of course.

wow bro, i'm not at my home computer right now so i dont have any of my resources. i'll try to help you out when i get back to my house. anyway, good luck and figure out a way to solve that problem!
