Hello From Airborne School

TxArmyGuy

New member
Well I graduated Yesterday and now a certified 31U Signal support systems specialist

I got to jump school 2day and will inprocess 2morrow. 2weeks and 3 days from Monday I'll have my jump wings...I'm going to try and talk to the Ranger Liason 2morrow. Hopefully he will be in so I can get it setup to change my orders to go to Rip straight from Jump school...It's very laid back here and seems like a good place. Alot of my buddies from Basic are here now and sound like they are having fun

Congratulations!!!!:)

We turned the temperature up for you, so you could sweat a little bit more while you are down there.:D

yeah it feels like I'm back home in Houston...

Hey does anyone know of a Drag Strip near Columbus GA????I'm getting a great car within the next week, week and a half from now and I want to put all 10 cyl to work to see what it can do

Congrats!!

Airborne isn;t bad. DON'T get a sunburn on teh weekend or you are going to get killde in teh harnes. Just trust me.

The mini- PX is right up teh road from teh Airborne barracks. I am sure you found it - that's where the Burger King and Anthony's Pizza are...probably where you'll spend most of your weeknights.

Ther is NO reason to go to Main Post. You won't need teh commissary or big PX.

weekends: get out of Columbus if you can. I-185 leads to everything in COlumbus, except downtown. If you must stay there:

1> Old City Jail - downtown Columbus (take a cab). Also in teh area is the Loft and the Uptown Tap. Not too bad.

2> Red Rider's on Miller Road - it;s the exit just north of Macon Rd (I think it;s exit 7A)

3> Victoria's (just across from Red Rider's)

Downtown is the best scene though. It;s right of Voctory Dr past the Colisuem. Get a cab.

Plenjty of strip joints on Victory Drive. Recommend teh Foxy Lady.

Don't go to Al Who's (if it is still open). it sucks. Your budduies may want to but don't bother. Talk them out of it.

Auburn University is an hour away. But they hate military guys, generally.

Get to Atlanta if you can, or Panama City FL for teh weekends.

PM me if you have questions about ANYTHING. I lived at Benning for a while.

Hey Tx....Good luck in Jump School, get " Blood Wings " and follow the tradition my man, just don't let them see ya do it....rather frowned on now days....heh heh heh...Thanks to a few Marines I might add....

Listen to Matt on the night life, and Yes, steer clear of VD Drive, we didn't call it that fer nut'in....Head to Fla. when ya can my man, feet and knees together and enjoy the view and ride....

And PLEASE do me a favor, on your first jump, don't act like your asleep on the bird like alot of hardasses will, no one will sleep, you're all equal in that....you're scared shitless, but the adrenalin rush makes it all worth while......

Enjoy " Cardiac Hill " in the heat my man....heh heh heh

Wear the wings with pride, then get that bronze star added to them....

On another note.....Hey Matt, did you know Kurt Schmid, the Delta Medic on the Mog. Raid??? Kurt and I came through everything together, including EMT school, and pathfinder....He's a damn good Bro, he and Pardal just got back from Japan, talked with them last night...

Name sounds really familiar.....maybe just a little bit ahead of me. Was he ever with Regt HQ? or (ugh!) RTB?

Schmid and I were among the first, along with Duffy, Coghlin, McMahon, Englehardt, Young, and Thetford, Carnahan, and Hart to go through Advanced Strategic Recon School taught by then 1st Sgt D. Chapman....

All except me went on to form the first Ranger Recon, I went a different ave. at the time...<wink>.....So you may know him from the Recon Teams....you should rec. the name Thetford, he was a C. Company 2nd Batt. boy.....Also as a side note Matt, "Doc" Marsh(Maj. Rob Marsh) is my Family doctor now, he retired on disability after a malfunction on a HALO Jump a few years back, still squared away as ever...<wink>

Lets help Tx out a bit......add to this at will Matt, what we remember most....

I remember the awe of seeing my first tabbed SP4.

I remember the first guy I saw wearing the "Black Beret" when it still meant "Elite"

I remember going home the first time and finding out the world was the same, but I would never be again.

I remember my friends asking way to many questions.

I remember recieving my first Black Beret, and how wooly and flat is was, and the care I took to shape it to my head.

I remember wanting to go home, but knew I couldn't.

I remember laying in my bunk hurting all over.

I remember how we thought we would live forever.

I remember almost dying -

When I almost drowned on a scout swimmer op.
When I hit the ground in the desert with blown panels.
When I fell down a mountain (the Plt. Ldr. broke both legs).
When I fell in a well.
When lightning hit beside me while alone on my EIB roadmarch.
When lighting hit the telephone pole when I was talking to my mom.
When I almost blacked out on the ramp at 25,000 because my O2 got shut off.

I remember the NCO's who made me what I am.

I remember why you try not to move in the jungle at night

I remember that bees are very deadly in the jungle. much more so than snakes

I remember the Darby Queen.." The Bitch "

I remember " Green Hell "

I remember a guy freezing his dick to his zipper and still driving on with a road march.

I remember the same guy getting his head shot off on a live fire.(PFC Ron Lyle)

I remember guys finishing road marches with IV's hanging out their arms.

I remember the Ranger I didn't even know bouncing on a jump at Ft. Bragg.

I remember working with "D-Boys" for the first time...that really put the zap in my mind at the time.

I remember STABO the first time.

I remember girls in Panama, the Ancon Inn was definately hot, and not just with women either.

I remember being armed to the teeth.

I remember shotgunning both doors.

I remember thinking I would die from the cold.

I remember thinking I would die from the heat.

I remember how the air smells different above 10,000.

I remember how quite it is once your chute opens.

I remember taking a piss and thanking God everytime I hit the ground safely....Had to piss first though....heh heh heh.

I remember how the mud and dirt looks the same all over the world.

I remember thinking while in Third World Shitholes how great the United States of America really is!!

I remember grabbing a 6ft rattlesnake by the tail and pulling him out of his hole because I was really hungry.

I remember eating so many Armadillos that we began calling them " Possum on the Half-Shell"

I remember " High Speed ".

I remember running and puking.

I remember blowing the ice out of my aperture to shoot.

I remember all the Rangers crippled in training.

I remember how drunk 19 year olds can get.

I remember Victory Drive, Ranger Joes, and River Street.

I remember the smell of bug juice and a cammie stick sliding on your face.

I remember how uncomfortable you can get with a 100+ pound ruck between your legs waiting to go out the door.

I remember how my feet looked after a long Op.

I remember how the swamps sounded at night.

I remember being wet and hungry nearly all the time.

I remember being dropped off in the wrong DZ, which happened to be the wrong fucking state. We wondered for 4 days why our maps were constantly wrong...heh heh heh

I remember the feeling of watching a 100 Rangers appear out of the dark and fog and cross a field.

I remember all the quitters who were weak of heart and mind.

I remember praying for war.

I remember my best friends.

I remember my parents seeing me in the airport for the first time with medals and that Black Beret.

I remember seeing body bags for the first time...they were empty, but it makes you wonder...

I remember laying in the jungle at night wondering what my family was doing.

I remember not being able to tell my family where I was going, but for them to not worry bout me.....

I remember fights.

I remember how good a hot shower felt after coming in out of the field felt, and not having cammie on your face for the first time in a month.

I remember IG Inspections.

I remember Ruck Runs.

I remember Jungle Boots and UDT Trucks.

I remember square knots and two half hitches.....fucking Mountain Phase sucked shit, but the pancakes were the best I have ever eaten, or will ever eat for that matter.

I remember being tabbed out, and the feeling of relief it was.

I remember wanting to butt stroke loser fuckers who brought the entire team down in Ranger school....may they rot in Hell.

I remember Droneing....BIG-TIME!!!(meaning you were so tired you fell asleep standing up, sitting down, or during the " Ruck-Sac Flop ")

I remember 50% security during the night.

I remember the first, and only time I fell asleep pulling security....not a nice way to awaken with a foul tempered Sgt. holding a Randal knife to your ear.....heh heh heh

I will never forget the Ranger Creed.

I remember what true pain feels like.

Fucking Hooah.......!!!!!!

Ranger, that post got me pretty revved up. I'm 4-7 days from finding out if I've been accepted to Army OCS. My top choices for jobs (which I won't get until more than halfway through OCS) are helicopter pilot and MI. If I get MI though, I don't want to be stuck somewhere looking at maps. I want to be out in the field. Whatever job I take (if I have a choice) I'll make sure Ranger training is an option.

TxArmyGuy - Good luck. Hopefully I'll be at Ft Benning by October (for OCS). I have to make a quick stop at basic first though. :D

I hear ya - but I meant it on a totally different level than literal.

:)

Hey Fro....Go with the chopper pilot, and if ya qualify, transfer to Task Force 160, based in Ft. Campbell Kentucky.....If and when you decide to get out, more job options will be available to you...Plus you get to work with all the " Good Guys " ...<wink>.

Ranger - I would love to be a chopper pilot but there's not a really good chance as an officer. Most of those slots go to Warrant Officers. But I wanted to get the full commissioning so there ya go.

I will be working my ass off in OCS though since I understand that at least part of the selection process is class ranking. The better you do the better choices you have.

But like I said, if I can't get helicopter pilot, I want a job that allows me to go to Ranger School.

Remember Fro....Ranger school is just a tab, that scroll is a way of life....

WO or 2nd lt.s....call the WO Mr. or sir, and the 2nd lt. sir....not much difference in fact Fro.....

Don't get tunnel vision on MI or Ranger school, there is time for schools, go for the birds...you're treated much better..

Ranger

Also Tx, keep your eyes open on your first jump...harder to do than it sounds, don't hot dog it, watch out for other jumpers, and keep a good eye on the ground. It comes up a helluva lot quicker than you think, do a good riser slip, feet and knees together, relax, and roll with the impact...

Hot days with high humidity and a three MPG breeze, you land like a feather...cold days, no humidity, and no breeze...you hit hard as hell

When you jump the MC1-1, don't try and be a sky-god, go with the flow, turn into the wind and enjoy the ride...

Be safe, pay attention.....the hardest thing about airborne school is quite simply....The Jump....nothing else matters

You will do well, and I wish you the best of luck.....should you graduate Ranger School, e-mail me the date, and I will try and attend....Graduation is pretty cool....

Ranger

Roger that Ranger....Monday I start School...That was a pretty cool list...I'm excited about everything I'm about to start doing. while some of my classmates are a bit scared about the jumps...I must be partly crazy or just a secret adrenlin junkie.

I'll take a pair of wings over a pair of legs anyday.

Ranger did you happen to know a James Cockrum? He spent some time down in Panama with the 7th group...

Remember on the way down if somebody asks if they can borrow your chute, you tell them, "no way." save the nice guy stuff for a later time. :D

It doesn't ring a bell right off hand, ask him if he knew Manny Pardal, he was there for quite awhile....he and I came up together...damn good guy as well....And don't worry, I was the same way in Airborne School.....it gets alot different when they open the doors and say..." Drop zone coming up, stand in the door".......That's when the adrenlin really begins to flow....heh heh heh.....Don't forget a small instant camara(disposable), use 550 cord and tie it around your neck then tuck it down your shirt...a picture is worth a thousand words at times....heh heh heh...I have quite a few pics from different altitudes....<wink>

My favorite passage from Henry V

Whoever does not have the stomach for this fight, let him depart. Give him money to speed his departure since we wish not to die in that man's company. Whoever lives past today and comes home safely will rouse himself on this day every year and show his neighbor his scars, and tell embellished stories of all their great feats of battle. These stories will teach his son and from this day, until the end of the world, we shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers: for whoever has shed his blood with me shall be my brother. And those men afraid to go will think themselves lesser men as they hear of how we fought and died together.

I wish you luck and safe landings, where ever they may be my friend.............

Plf's can be a pain in the ass or the head for that matter...No wait just about anywhere on the body.

Black hats have pretty interesting jobs...But today it has come to my attention that the future Ring Tapers(Pointers) or most of them here have a god like attitude with the NCO's going through the course...Too bad one of them is about to be run out of our class because of his attitude. Junior NCO's sometimes need to chill the F--- out...Just because you have the stripes dont mean that being in the army for 2-3 years makes you qualified to complain about some Private or Cadet in how they are performing the Landing or Exiting drills

Black hats have the coolest jobs in teh Army. They're done by like mid day Thursday.

Take it easy on the Ring Knockers - you're going to be working for them, and after a few months of real active duty service kills the attitude, you'll find they are generally the best officers out there. (I was not one, btw).

Some of the junior NCO's there are assholes. It;s the way of the world. They're only trying to imperss the older guys.

Enjoy your weekend. Try to get "mound detail" when you are doing the 34 foot towers. Big fun. Keep it up.

Hey ranger you should do another I remember thread .. What is a
"D-boy"... Delta Force? What sets them apart from the rest? I think Matt mentioned an ability to mentally handle extremely stressful situations?

Delta Force is very small. Just a fwe hundred guys. They liev and work in a compund at Ft Bragg, so obviously they know each other extremely well. Goes a long way in a military unit.

Delta gets unlimited money to train. whatever they want, they get. They never face budget shortfalls. (True of all special ops).

Delta selection is more mental than physical. Anyone can put on a 100lb backpack and walk 25 miles through the woods if tehy train for it . You can't train for a psychological evaluation, and that is real big with Delta Force. Intelligence is highly valued.

Additionally the selection process includes an appearance before a selection committee, (sqaudron commanders and force commander, generally) which attempts to determine if the candidate will work well with the existing squadron members. In other words, you can be realy sqaured away and not make it because they don't think you'll fit.

Once you are in you train train train. Lots of shooting. There are anecdotes about guys who went on sick call with sore hands from shooting so much. Training is unconventional - Delta mission is primarily counterterrorism and high impact, short duration urban combat.

No one who hasn't been there really knows much about it. But Rangers train with them about once or twice a year, and commonly invite them to observe and critique some aspects of our training.

Ground week is over and I'm moving on to Tower week on monday. I will make my first jump 1 week from 2morrow. I have been lucky enough to pull mound Detail most of the 3 days they were used. I volunteered for Running the ropes yesterday and made 3 runs out and in and said enough of that crap. Running with boots, balistic helmet and warm temps can be a bit of a drag when 20mph gusts pick up.

I was able to resign a volunteer statement for RIP yesterday so I will be going to it once I graduate from here...No more Alaska for me.

And Tx....Yes, commo is a great job, you'll really love it on road marches with the Bat. Commander.....gotta luv ankle deep tank trails......~snicker~....~snicker~....~snicker~

On a side note...Matt, do me a favor, see who the RI's are at the various Phases of Ranger school....we can e-mail them and ensure they give Buck, Tx, and Fro special tender, loving care.

Terrence Ketter was at Benning, we can always drop them a line telling them how these three wadgobblers were woofing shit on how easy Ranger school would be, and being tabbed out don't mean shit....heh heh heh

J/K guys.............................Sorta....<wink>

Chris, having spent my fair share of time in Columbus as well, I think you need to get out and see as much as you can, and make your own judgements. I had plenty of fun at Al Who's, and I know many a Ranger who hooked up with women from Auburn. Not too many decent strip joints left, but there are a lot of "lingerie shops" now.

Thanks...Not too sure my girlfriend would like me hooking up with anyone from Auburn, especially since she just bought me a 94 viper and is paying for most of it.

I'm not going to get my car till a week from Next friday. Insurance and shipping will take a bit of time. Anyone know of a company that can get a car to me in less then 1 week? She scheduled Vanlines to move it here a week from Friday.

My heart isn't that cruel. Everyone deserves those.

I do still know some RI's at Camp Darby - you know, the real assholes. I don't know if they will be there in a year but I can find out, and make sure our EF buddies get hooked up.

I love mud...I love water...I pray to see the pit soon :)

too bad I probably wont get to see ranger school for 6-10months after I get done with RIP. Hopefully I'll get into a good Commo shop and have a Commo chief that thinks I'm squared away cause I want to get into it. Just that gut feeling that not being tabbed out will suck the longer I'm wearing the scroll and wearing the tan beret without it.

Well I finished the last of the qualifying today, the next 2 days we practice the mock exits and Sat we make our first jump. A week from 2morrow I'll be getting those Silver Wings pinned on. My girlfriend will be flying in for graduation so I'll be sure to take some good pics of her pinning them on. The pics will be developed soon after I take them next week and should be posted on here by July 4 no later then the 5th.

Worm Pit / Malvesti = a muddy shitty watery obstacle course you will crawl through at Ranger Training Brigade / Ft Benning. It sucks but it is kinda fun if you take it with a grain of salt..

change the channel = a stupid PT exercise you may never ever do, a subset of teh exercise known as "watching TV". Don't worry about this one.

TX - good luck bro. eyes open.....

Let us not forget the " Jo Jo the Ducks" and the " B-52's" all are great exercises and fun at parties.....heh heh heh

I'm getting pretty amped about all this! Thatnks to all the guys posting here.

I just found out that as an officer, I'll be pushed to go to Ranger School as it weighs in greatly for my promotions. Oh no! Don't send me to Ranger School! (dripping with sarcasm)

I know it'll be tough but I just have the weird drive inside to push myself as hard as I can. I want to know my breaking point and I haven't found it on my own. I'm sure those guys will find it then push it to a higher point. :D

How much hand to hand combat do you learn/practice in Ranger School?

Benning phase is the first phase (out of the 3)? Is that where they test you mentally and do all the yelling and ultra boot camp bullshit?

Yup....When I went through, there was Benning, Mountain, Desert, and Swamp Phase...after a few Rangers froze to death, they lowered the time to 52 days, or so....Still alot of fun...heh heh heh

Ranger

I found this on another message board and thought it needed posting here.

This mainly applies to the College Ops going Infantry, but is open to all. I've read some of the other messages in the past about Ranger School, and I get the feeling that there are some misperceptions about it.

First, I have to say that this is not a commando school. This is a school designed to teach and assess you in the fundamentals of combat operations at platoon level and below. Let me say that this is a great school, and the Ranger Tab is coveted. However, not getting your tab does not mean the end of your career as an Infantry officer; nor does graduating from Ranger School place you on assignment to a commando unit. Special Forces: you have to go to a different school for that, and you have to be a 1LT(Promotable) to go (active component). 75th Ranger Regiment: you have to prove your worth at your first assignment to apply.

This is a leadership school. You are not graded on your ability live with lack of food, sleep, and toilet paper while humping for miles. You are graded on your ability to make competent decisions as a leader (on the days you are assigned to be a leader for a particular mission) while you are tired, hungry, cold and wet (or hot and wet). In addition, you are graded by your peers. If you are a turd, then everybody will write things like "lazy" or "whines more than my wife" (actual comments) on their peer evals at the end of each phase. Somebody will be rated last on the peer list, and that's ok. What the instructors look at are the comments.

1. Who can go? This was a "cut and paste" from the RTB website:

"Commissioned officer personnel. Ranger training is available on a voluntary basis for officers in the following career management fields:
11A - Infantry Officer
12A - Armor Officers allocated against authorized
12C positions
12C - Cavalry Officers
13A - Battalion and Company Fire Support Officers
(Habitually associated in direct support to
Infantry battalions)
14B - Short Range Air Defense Officer (Habitually
attached or in direct support to Infantry

"Those officers of any branch or specialty assigned to Ranger Coded Positions within the 75th Ranger Regiment or the Ranger Training Brigade may attend."

"No security clearance is required."

"No additional obligated service is incurred by active Army Commissioned Officers for attending the course."

"Students are not required to be airborne qualified, but are encouraged to attend airborne training prior to attending Ranger School."

"Ranger qualified officers or NCOs should brief all Ranger school candidates on the course prior to their attendance. Applicants should concentrate on improving upper body strength and foot marching in properly fitted boots with a full rucksack, for distances up to 16 miles."

#s 2 and 3 below can be completed during week 1 (aka RAP Week or Hell Week) at Camp Rogers, but it is highly advised you complete them during Zero Week (volunteer orientation week). I don't care what the cadre officially say about how fair they are about grading the PT Test during RAP Week, when they get a full class of people that passed their PT Test during Zero Week, and they are in danger of overflowing with students, it becomes "number-crunching time. I STRONGLY urge you to go to Zero Week to take the PT Test. You get the weekend off between Zero Week and RAP Week (about 1700 Friday to 0300 Monday).

2. PT Test: here's the standard to pass.
-Push-ups: 49 reps
-Sit-ups: 59 reps
-2 mile run: 15:12 or less in running shoes
-Pull-ups: 6 reps (palms facing in)
-this is the standard regardless of age

3. Combat Water Survival Test (CWST)
-15 meter swin w/BDUs, boots, LBE, and rifle
-3 meter drop (with rifle and blind-fold)
-equipment removal (underwater)

4. 5 mile run in 40 minutes (completed in formation): completed during Week 1 only

5. 3 mile buddy run: with boots, BDUs, LBE, and rifle. Completed with a partner (you must be able to touch your partner at any given time). Completed in 30 minutes. During Week 1 only.

6. Day and Night Land Nav Test (individual) During Week 1.

7. Obstacle Course: don't know what to say about that... either you can do it or you can't. Can't remember if that was during Week 1 or at Camp Darby.

8. There are a number of other tasks you will complete during weeks 2 and 3 at Camp Darby, but they are no big deal. The patrols are what you need to concentrate on.

9. Ranger School is gonna suck. There's no way around it. Your muscles are going to atrophe due to lack of nutrition (you'll know it when you start smelling like ammonia... some of you will experience that in OCS), and your immune system is going to break down for a while. Your fingers and toes will be numb for a while. You will need about 6 months to recover from this school (no, I don't mean 6 months of bed rest). Everybody had their own plan before Ranger School to beat the atrophe problem. Mine was to get fat on donuts while still being able to complete the PT tasks (they don't care about height/weight regs there). In the end, I still lost muscle mass.

10. Meals: you get 2 per day now. In garrison, you get to eat in the dining facility. In the field, MREs. Don't worry, you'll still be hungry.

11. Sleep: about 4 hrs per day in garrison depending on how good your class is at getting things done. In the field, about 2 hrs per day. Sometimes, your Instructors will put you in a "clandestine patrol base" when the students are so tired, they become untrainable. That means everybody goes to sleep for about 4 hours uninterrupted (after a while, four hours will feel like you slept all day). Don't worry about the whole sleep thing. Your body will acclimate to it after a while.

12. Tobacco is no longer allowed. It was once allowed during summer phase, but they finally outlawed it all together. Gum is allowed though.

13. How bad it sucks... I said this in another post "My Life in OCS." You will hear from other Ranger School graduates about how bad their lives were, or some scary story that happened to them. Don't combine all those stories into one big story that will be your life in Ranger School. You'll experience some bad things, but you won't experience ALL the things you heard from everybody else you talked to. For me, the worst and scariest day of Ranger School (same as OCS) was the first day when I walked through the gate to inprocess, because I did not know what to expect. After that, it became "just another day." Also, remember... (and this applies to OCS as well) when you feel like you want to quit, just tell yourself "I'll do it one more day." Do that everyday until you graduate. When you're bored or when you need to stay awake, make a small list in your notepad of all the things you will do when you graduate down to the detail (what movies you want to see, what restaurants you will eat at, and what you will order there). Although life will suck there, just remember, everybody else there will be going through exactly what you will be going through... you're not doing it alone.

14. DO NOT show up with any type of Ranger t-shirt. And if you bring your POV, DO NOT show up with any Ranger stickers or license plates on your car. The Ranger Instructors will supervise while each and every student parks his car in the gated parking lot.

15. You CAN, however, keep a Ranger Tab tucked inside your cap or in your pocket as a reminder of why you are there.

16. Have some kind of outside support group going for when you get your 3-4 hour pass at the end of Benning Phase. They will be able to do your laundry and fix your stuff while you sleep (or have sex, for some of you). And they can have all the food you want (like pizza) already there for you when you get released. I found that the National Guard was real good about doing that for their guys (except for the sex part). My wife did everything for me, except show up on time.

17. Some of you will get fat when you graduate. During our last week, outprocessing week (this week is easy), they gave us a bunch of Ranger School "Miller Time" t-shirts. They were all in X-Large. They said, "don't worry. You'll get fat and grow into them."

18. This is something for the wives of future Ranger graduates. Your husbands may leave there in a wierd state of mind. They may act unusual, like they don't care about anything. They may not want to have sex for a while either. My wife became suspicious after a while. She called some of my friends' wives to ask if their husbands were the same way; and they said yes. Don't worry about it. This may last about a month (for some, longer). Nonetheless, it'll pass. Just give them time. But it's best you know it now.

19. I know this is a lot of information to put out. And some may wonder what this has to do with OCS. Once I knew I was branched Infantry (before I even went to OCS), all I could think about was Ranger School. And by that, I mean, "Oh my God. I gotta go to Ranger School. I'm scared sh*tless." Everyday until I went, this feeling hung over my head. So, this message is meant to open some of your eyes and dispel some of your fears. Let me tell you what my Ranger Tab did for me. I am no longer afraid of any "this sucks" school the Army has to offer: SERE (POW school), SFAS, SCUBA (although it has it's own unique difficulties that makes it suck), etc. What it did was build my confidence, because I am no longer afraid of a life that sucks (except Staff Duty). For those who are interested about Ranger School, or what life is like throughout your pipeline Infantry training, I would be happy to open up a chat forum. As far as life in an Infantry platoon, I would like to get some other Infantry PLs on board to discuss that issue. My life as a PL is at NTC, different from other PLs at 82nd, 10th Mountain, 1st Cav, etc. We all have different experiences in that field.

Well guys, after los of reading and thinking, I've come to this conclusion.

If I can't fly helicopters, I'm asking for Infantry. That's the only way I'll have guarenteed slots for Airborne and Ranger School.

Let the bodies hit the FLOOOOOOORRRR!!! :fistfullo :mp5::destroy: :chesty:

Are the Rangers involved with Army Intel ?

Hmmm, along those lines, what security clearance do you require to go through the school? How about actually getting in a Ranger outfit?

The entire ranger school experience can be summed up in two words:

IT SUCKS.

It isn't super hard, but IT SUCKS. You won't be asked to do any one thing that is physically superhuman, but IT SUCKS. The real challenge is in your mind, to not quit, because IT SUCKS. It is no fun to be tired, hungry and dirty (plus cold or hot and wet) for long periods of time. In fact, IT SUCKS.

But after 61 days, you'll never have to do it again.

How cool would it be to sneak around at night gathering Intel.
It would suck doing the paperwork and Politics stuff...

After retirement you could join "The COMPANY"

Fucking BINGO....Perfect answer!!!

Also Fro...get there early, head to Ranger Joes, buy 2 PC's(patrol caps) have them sew on the Ranger eyes(square knot and 2 half hitches)....Once at Benning, some fucking RI will look at your cover, then rip the eyes off the cap, and tell you to re-sew them on before you eat....head back to the barracks, chill for a bit, grab the extra PC and head back...when time affords you, re-sew the eyes back on the other PC....Might save ya a meal, and believe me, all the RI's know the tricks of this, and smuggling "Poogie Bait" on patrols...get caught with " Poogie Bait " and it's your ass Bro!!!

Lots of good posts.....Well 1 more day and all we have is safety briefings and demonstrations...WOOHOO As long as the Isolated thunderstorms predicted hold off I'll be able to jump and graduate on time.

I'm less than 3 weeks from when I leave for basic. Running every day and getting faster each time. This morning I ran 2.6 miles in 21 min 21sec (8.2 minute miles). Is this a decent time? I know it is for basic and possibly OCS, but what times do I need to be running for Airborne and Rangers?

I would say you should strive to max out your 2 mile run for your apft...Aim for the 18-21 point range...Anything under 13minutes and your maxing at that age bracket. Some might say faster but it's a starting point.

8 minute miles is the standard for Bat. PT....However, once you get to your unit, you don't do alot of Bat PT, it's more along the lines of platoon, or squad PT....I got stuck with a squad leader that liked to run 6 minute miles, he used to burn my ass up on every run....it's had to answer this well, but strive for 7 minute miles.
