I use Sam-e for mood enhancement, as it's necessary for the synthesis of neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine.
It's also great for joint complications and a variety of other ailments, where a methyl group needs to be augmented to allow regeneration of cells and removal of toxins.
Drveejay11 has produced a great list of easily atainable liver protectors.I dont believe there's much to add here.
Caffeine and ephedrine are not detrimental to the liver.
Here's some info on the use of sam-e to preserve liver integrity:
SAM-e and liver disease, cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis
The liver has the highest concentration of SAM-e in the body. Researchers have discovered many of the functions that SAM-e performs in the liver. Some of these regulate fat and fluid and improve the flow of bile. SAM-e transfers sulfur, which is used to make blutathione, taurine, and cysteine; all of which are involved in metabolism. People with liver disease have low levels of SAM-e, and their inability to make SAM-e can cause several events.
Methionine, can be available in excess which increases the toxin load for the liver.
Without the taurine and glutathione that SAM-e produces, the liver cannot make bile salts. This damages the liver's ability to produce bile, thereby reducing the body's ability to metabolize fats.
Low levels of SAM-e in the liver hamper the organ's ability to maintain cell growth and cell repair.
In 1975, several studies were published on SAM-e for liver disease, cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis. A study by Dr. Labo was conducted with over 50 patients who had liver disease and cirrhosis. The patients who were treated with SAM-e had significant improvements in liver function. In a study published in 1975, Dr. Cantoni treated 70 patients who had chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. At the end of the study the patients treated with SAM-e had virtually all of their liver proteins restored. A study also published in 1975 by Dr. Ideo with 15 patients found the production of albumin returned to normal in SAM-e treated patients. Studies done in 1989 and in 1992 found SAM-e as a positive solution for the treatment of liver disease, hepatitis and cirrhosis.*
