i was wondering which will help build more mass, incline bench or flat bench? which one will assist in building more overall body mass? see my upper chest is lacking compared to the rest so i been doing more incline but was wondering if it will have the same affect as flat bench.
thanks

Just read an article that explained that if you want to bench press more, and get bigger leave the barbell bench alone and do dumbbell bench.

if done correctly incline is a super mass builder, but i wouldnt do it first in my routine.first to get the blood flowing through out the chest ill do flat bench press
lowering the bar to my neck instead of my nipps, this way im stressing the upper chest.
next ill go into incline bench followed by incline flies and end it with db pull overs.
this routine is based around the development of the upper portion of the chest try it for
a 2 months and measure your results than and now.
ps. make sure the grip and the bar postioning
is exact.incline bench can be an awkward exercise, try to have some one watch you and
see how your doing it.my upper chest lacked too until i learned how to properly manipulate that region...

I am strickly powerlifting i know longer do incline bench> I currently pause on the flat bench 515lbs. I am 5'10" i weigh 220 my chest is 50 inches waist is 33. Mass FLAT. Power, FLAT. More immpresive, FLAT. Run greater risk for injury, INCLINE. Not to say buildy builders lack thickness cause that is wrong there are some big SOB out there. But the Majority of them look nice to the eye i guess but lack thickness in very important areas. Of course i am not refering to the pro's! Local that compete in my gym, which memebers run close to 10,000.

flat gives u big thick front delts, and as a powerlifter u shouldnt b feeling jack in your chest. u should b using your lats and tri's way more.
incline gets u looking better, but flat will make u thick as hell as long as u lift for your chest not for more and more weight on a single.
sorry. i'm into powerlifting and bodybuilding. get hurt less training in the 4-6 rep range than in the 5's and singles.

I believe that Flat Bench Presses and Incline Bench Presses are good mass builders. If you're a beginner, stick with flat bench presses. If you have good amounts of muscle on your mid chest, I recommend doing Incline to add more mass to your upper chest. Always use a spotter, especially on Incline.

I prefer heavy dumbells for both flat and incl. because I have no spotter and like to go heavy. Also, I love the stretch of dumbells, which keeps my flexibility up, as opposed to some guys who do nothing but barbells and get to the point that they only lower the bar partway - not because they are cheating, but because they actually lack the flexibility to go all the way down - I have seen big football players in my gym with this problem. I usually do both flat and incline - one workout I start with flat, the next workout I start with incline, always alternating like this. (I never do decline - after all, who has a problem with their lower chest development!?)

I agree with everyone who replied. First to the powerlifter, he is totally right from the powerlifting aspect. And damn, 515 at 220 is pretty good, how old are you? (respond to [email protected]). From the BB point of view you know it is imperative to attack your chest from all angles. If your upper chest is laggin, then do four exercises when training. 1 flat, 1 decline and 2 Upper. I agree with whoever said not to start with incline press, get blood in the region first. Doing this helps you feel the area you want to concentrate on more. I hope this helps, if you have any further questions please email me at the above address.

It depends on the body type.
Flye's are what work for me.

4 sets decline DB flye's
4 sets flat DB press
4 sets incline DB flye's
3 sets cable crossovers
every other week I alternate the incline flye's with presses.
I have way overpowering delts Bench does nothing for me, I did one workout with 4sets flat 4sets incline 4sets decline all barbell
the only muscles sore were my triceps (slightly) and front delts (in pain, very sore). Find what works for you, gain knowledge of your own body, good luck!!
