Depends...get a high quality gainer that has no sugar or fructose or any crap like that. They help add much needed calories to your diet.

I personally don't recommend weight gainers. But if you do want to use one, I suggest that you look for one that has good quality protein and low sugar. If you get a gainer with a lot of sugar, a lot of the carb turns to fat. I recommend taking a good protein powder. If you want to gain mass try using a combination of proteins. I never really gained a lot of mass from whey protein. I know a few people that are saying that Cyto Pro WPI, Methoxy Pro and Nitro Tech are pretty good products. But I haven't tried them so I wouldn't know.

Carbs are way to high in most weight gainers for me. They put to much gut on me.

If you are ingesting way too many calories over what your body can handle then it will turn it into fat. It does not matter if it weight gainer or food. Too much of either and the fat will be put on. It is a matter of knowing how mnay calories you need per week then increase it over the weeks as you lift. Too much at one time will cause your body to store it as fat.

Nobu:

Your right on the button Vitamin!

Companies have been scamming people for years with these weight gain powders. These products are always full of lots of simple sugars. But, that's just part of the problem with using weight gainers. The main issue is the amount of calories and how your body is going to absorb them. One's body can only absorb a certain amount of nutrients each meal. After that your body will store the carbohydrates in your muscles and liver...called glycogen...long chain of glucose. Next, the rest will be stored as fat. Basically, any weight gainer over l000 calories is a joke. You certainly don't hear the manufactures calling it "muscle gainers"...that's why they call it weight gainers...fat and muscle gain!

Mr A ... nice to see you ...

Not all weight gainers are full of simple sugars, but like others have said, whether you gain muscle or fat depends on the rest of your diet and not just one part.

I'd try to obtain most of your calories from solid food, and use a weight gainer sparingly.

If your going to take a weight gainer use it after your work out,it's the best time that the body will absorb it than store it.
