Dudes, when I do squats the pain on my upper back (by my neck) from the weight sitting there is more intense than the pain in my legs from the excercise so I can't do too many.

I tried wrapping a towel around the bar to cushion it but it doesn't help.

Is this a common problem or am I doing something wrong?

It may be your form. Reduce the weight and work on ur form. The better your form the better your results. Remember this...
Form over Function. Some engineer said it but it makes sense in all things.

The power to endure pain outlives the power to inflict it...the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph. It is dearness that gives everything its value.

It sounds like you've got the bar too high up your neck. The bar is supposed to sit across the bottom of your neck and be level with your shoulders. I reckon you've got it too high.

The problem could be your trap development. Or maybe you're bending too far forward, pressing the weight into your back. Traps are big and powerful muscles; you should be able to load well over three times your bodyweight on there before it starts to feel uncomfortable.
