I'm getting pretty bored with my tri workout and can never seem to get a routine which I really enjoy.

What do any of you lot do for tri's?

At the moment I'm doing =

Skull crushers (1 warm up and 2 sets)
Pushdowns (2)
French press (2)
Reverse grip single arm pulldowns (1).

I don't want to do dips because I feel like I'm overtraining my chest.

Just want to know your thoughts.

Cheers

What's with the low sets? I'll tell you what. I've been in this game for years and have finally released that more is definietly not better. I have never ached so much sinced a lowered the sets and upped the intensity. What's the point in doing 15,12, 10,8 for each exercise? When your muscle is warmed up you only need to hit it once or twice per exercise. To quote Dorian Yates -if you can hit a nail into a piece of wood in one go, why hit it again?

Try reading some of Dorian Yates material and other modern bodybuilding stuff. The days of Arnie and doing 20 sets on everything are long gone.

ive read all of Dorians books, and i know what u mean. but in my experience most people dont have nearly enough intensity to manage what he does in his training. and not to mention if you are drug free. i combine his training philosphy with arnolds, and to me, 3 set per exercise are what it takes.

I try to do 10-12 sets for a large muscle (e.g chest/back) and 6-8 for small muscles (tri/bi). To get to the desired number of sets I will begin with a couple of three sets (for the compound exercise) but only do one or two sets for the other 2 or 3 exercises. I find that people who do 4 sets on everthing are usually wasting energy on the first two sets.

I agree that I am no Dorian - so I do more sets than he recommends (that's why I usually do 2 sets rather than 1). Very few people can exhaust a muscle in only a few sets (Dorian reckons he can do his biceps in 10 mins) but doing 20 sets is equally as unconstructive.

Another thing. Your arms are worked when you do chest, shoulders and back so you have to be real careful that you don't overtrain them. I know some people who only train their arms once or twice a month because they receive so much stimulation when you are working other muscles.

Why don't you train your triceps with your chest and your biceps with your back? Just a suggestion. That way you can do Dips without overtraining your chest. Here's a good split to work each body part once a week. Day 1- (Chest, Shoulders, Triceps); Day 2- Cardio
Day 3- (Quads, Hamstrings, Calves, Abs); Day 4- Cardio; Day 5- (Back, Traps, Biceps, Forearms); Day 6- Cardio or Rest; Day 7- Rest
Then Repeat.

Here's tricep routine.

Triceps Pressdowns 2 warm up sets. (It warms up the tissue around my elbows)

Skull Crushers 2 x 6-8
Dumbbell Overhead Extension 2 x 6-8

Parallel Bar Dips 2 x 10-12*
Dumbbell or Cable Kickbacks 2 x 10-12*

*these two exercises are supersetted.
