Should you be able to bench what you row? Curl what you can extend with triceps? Is this a good indication of anything or just an old wives tale? What would be a good measure of balance?

Those are old wives tales. All people are different, and all muscles are not the same size.

Ex. Triceps make 3/4 of your upper arm mass.
So if arm size is your goal..hit them tri's.

Muscles that are well balanced should be in this strength order(major muscle groups)

1. Legs strongest
2. Then your back
3. Then chest
4. Shoulders

More wives tales:

1. A belt will protect my back(If you think so...think again)

2. If countinue to do countless hours of cardio i will look fit(Not without weight training you won't, You will now be a skinny soft person, with no muscle tone)

3. More is better! (" I spent like 3 hours in the gym today" Joe is waisting his time. 1 TO 1.5 HOURS tops no more!)

4. More sets more growth (Excellent formula for overtraining...) I personally don't count sets, i know when my muscles are smoked, but i do know i've never made it past 12 for any muscles(not counting warmup)If you start to lose your pump during a workout(reverse pump) thats your cue to put down the weight, you've overtraining your muscle. Mike Metzer believed in doing one set for some muscle groups, and if you read his book "Heavy duty training" you'll see why. (Do not recomend for the begginer or novice weight trainer).

5.Spot reduction "I want to lose fat from here and here (pointing to abdomen and glutes) ladies there is no such thing as pinpointing your fat loss.

Thanks for the response. On that note here are more stupid things that the masses believe:

1. [Woman] If I lift weights I'll get too many muscles and look like a guy.

2. Bodybuilders are "muscle bound" and can't even comb their hair. They are not flexible at all.

3. She/He only looks that way because they use AS.

4. A high protein diet causes kidney damage.

5. They spend hours and hours at the gym--they have no life.

6. All BB's are so stuck on themselves they can't even pass a mirror without looking in it.

I know there is more.....

Oh RC you mean like this one...

sure bodybuilders look like that now but wait til they stop lifting and all that muscle turns into fat that's why you shouldn't have that much muscle...

Oh, geesh, yeah, I forgot about that one--how it all turns to fat....they'll say anything to justify not training.

My problem is similar to #6, but my belly gets me stuck in the doorway trying to get to the mirror. Can you relate Lobo?
