I use optimum nutrition whey & I've made
good gains.I got a 5lb. tub of it from
nutrition warehouse for like $35.It mixes
easily with a spoon & tastes just fine to me.
Dont fall for all that hype with desighner protein & all those others that claim to have
better absorption or other ingredients like
glutamine. If your serious about gaining size
you should be taking glutamine in a separate
form anyhow,& glutamine is fairly cheap
anyhow so save you money bro.

I'm not a big fan of the taste of Optimum's Whey (downright awful if you ask me), but I've been able to turn it into a cheap, good-tasting MRP by adding bananas and a bit of peanut butter to each serving, which is going to increase the carbs and essential fat calories a bit. It's hard to beat the price when you compare it to the other pre-mixed MRP products like Myoplex, Isopure, etc.

Optimum is definitely a best buy compared to the others. I hope that it is actually what it says it is. I find the chocolate has a great taste. I mix mine with egg whites and water. Also, I think GNC's version of whey protein is actually Optimum nutrition's with the GNC label on it. It tastes identical to me and is about the same price. If you go to GNC on the Tuesday Gold Card day, the GNC brand of Whey will only cost you $35.00-$40.00 for 5 pounds, which is 88 servings. Not bad at all.

By far the best protein powder I've ever used happens to also be the cheapest and is also great tasting. It's made by Alternative Nutrition and it only goes by the name "Alternative Whey". It is 27.50 for 77 servings. They give you the independant lab tests to verify absolute purity.
I used to use optimum nutrition's protein, but I switched when I saw their independant lab analysis results.
You can get Alternative Whey plus other products made by Alternative Nutrition at the dpsnutrition website or at http://www.alternativenutrition.net

Backdoc...how much protein do you get per serving of the Alternative Whey? Any other particulars you know about it? Their website is limited in info.

Each scoop is 23 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, and 2.4 grams of carbs. Everything really technical is based on their lab tests and of course what's on the label.
The thing that sets this company apart from others is that they get their protein from a very pure raw source. Often when you see a company stating that you get 85% of their protein, they are not telling you what percentage of the protein is bioavailable from the raw source. Most companies do their own thing with the raw materials and that translates to lower percent raw material per serving. So if they're not using high quality raw materials, then that hypothetical 85% is no longer accurate...you will be getting much less than that, since the raw material is reduced. Some independant lab reports on some products are less than 50% protein availability! That means you'd have to drink 2 servings just to get one serving of what the label claims. I'd better let you read the lab results rather than name names. Just suffice to say that the better quality products tend to be much more expensive.
Alternative Whey has 77 servings and since I go through a lot of protein, I want to get as much as I am paying for. Since this is the best price per serving, the best quality per serving and really great taste I'm convinced that this protein is far superior to just about anything I've tried before...and I've tried many brands.
Tell you what. If you give it a try and don't find that it is the best tasting, highest quality protein for your dollar, then post another message here and give me an earful. I know that info on the net is a gamble, but at 27.50 for a 5 pound container I'd say it's worth a try. (I personally like the vanilla mixed with skim milk).
I know that some people are sold on their particular brand of protein, and I understand that, since I'm sold on Alt. Nutrition. I'm really just touting them because of the high quality at such an affordable price.
Take it easy and I hope that answered your question.

Max muscle is a good product, I was disappointed with Optimum Nutrition. Both in the lab analysis and in my lack of results--I use so much protein that if there is a difference in quality, then my nitrogen balance is affected and I can feel a big difference in consistent growth and recuperation. I have used Max Muscle High 5 and I got the good results again, but since it costs me nearly 100 bucks a month on High 5, I wanted a cheaper priced equal. I spoke with the company owner of Alternative Nutrition sometime later and I tried the product. I was pleasantly surprised and I'm glad that I'll be spending just over 50 bucks a month on equal quality.
And again, I'm not trying to be argumentative because I too feel like a product with good quality should be stuck with.
Good luck and good health.

No, I'm not a spokesman of any kind for Alternative Nutrition (or any other company for that matter). I just like to pass on knowledge that I feel is important and might save other people money. I wish I'd had this website and others when I first got into buying supplements. That way I would've hopefully saved a lot of money that I wasted on expensive stuff. Just trying to help out.

Somec, if you want more technical info on the specifics of Alternative Whey, go to the website I listed a few posts back. When you get there, click on 'catalog'. Then click on the button (at the top of that page) that reads 100% whey protein. That should give you all the data you need in terms of the quality of the product.

If you are in good with your gym manager, he/she can get you the best deal from a distributor. I should know, I manage Shark Athletic Club and I get shit for cheap. What you pay 34.99 for I get for 19.00. If you don't live too far away, I can get you stuff for cheap.

I like Pro Fusion or Muscle Meals by Muscle Link. The products aren't cheap, but they're the best protein powders that I've used. I've used Prolab's whey protein, Designer, Champion. If you go to www.netrition.com, you can get them at a discount price, but it still isn't cheap. If you want to try a free sample of Muscle Meals, go to www.Ironmanmagazine.com.

alot of people are pushing these 5lb jugs for 25-30 bucks.those type of protein powders are garbge stay away from them .these bargain jugs are bought from the cheapest quality labs and their purity is highly defective.obviously they dont put the same stuff in the 40 dollar jugs,if your serious about bodybuilding you should be using a high quality whey isolate, stick with designer protein ,precision protein or other reputable brands, beware of bargain powders.its no wonder why so many people have a hard time making gains, the powdre theyre using just isnt supplying their muscles with the quality protein they need.those 5lb jugs are shit, and thats not just a personal opinion, ive spoken with many experts and pros in the field of bodybuilding nutrition they all agree bargain powders=catabalic catastrophe....

I would agree almost completely. Almost. Your statement to avoid any 5 lb containers within the price range of 25-30 is really a stereotype and is not true in all cases. Yes, I'll say it again, you're right about 99% of such brands--they aren't very high in quality. However, I've researched Alternative Nutrition's Whey Protein and I use it myself. I can honestly say that it is better quality and better tasting than any other protein shake I've tried. I go through a massive amount of protein every day and if the protein is poor quality, I notice it right away by several different factors. If you scroll back up and look at the message where I mentioned how to access the lab results for Alternative Nutrition's Whey Protein, then you'll see that they back up their product. They happen to be a small company and that seems to scare some people away, but don't let brands like Muscletech and their ads turn you to thinking that unless it's a big company then they aren't any good. I don't keep it a secret that I'm well versed in nutrition and biochemistry and if the product didn't cut it then I'd blast them. But it absolutely does stand up to lab tests, taste tests and quality results tests.
I also stand by my initial comment that if you try it and don't get at least the same results as you do with your favorite protein, after trying it then you and anyone else can tell me off and I'll take it with dignity. (But just note that if you say you tried it and start blasting me, I'll be sure to ask a question to verify whether or not you actually did buy a container---for instance, the third or fourth ingredient listed in order). I won't just take heat because someone doesn't like what I'm saying.
Honestly guys, I'm not trying to pull a fast one here. I make zero money when I talk about this company's protein. I'm just sick and tired (like the rest of you) of losing my hard earned money on bad products with 8 page ads in the magazines that won't even post their independant lab analysis results. At least Alternative Nutrition is willing to do that and I respect their forwardness. I've even told some of my weightlifting patients about it and I get thanked often for the good referral. Most of those people also are very hesitant to trust a 28 dollar container of protein. When they try it, they change their minds.
Look, I would be perfectly happy if everyone here decided to use a different protein source that is high quality (raw materials only!--which eliminates half of the brands out there) and great tasting. If you find one such brand then go with it. I also like designer protein as well, but they haven't been so forward in providing me with independant lab analysis or with informing me whether or not they use pure raw materials in their powder. Neither has Max Muscle. So I decided that any company that doesn't readily provide me with such information is not a company I would be comfortable telling my patients about.
Good luck and good health

I've personally tried a ton of different types. The link to the proteinfactory.com is a good place to learn about the different types. They are a mixer for probably all the companies that have been mentioned. I have found $5/lb is about the best deal you can get with whey. I personally like BIG WHEY the best. It is from Next Proteiens, same company as Next Nutrition. check it out at BIGWHEY.COM. I get it from dpsnutrition.com for $24.99/5lbs. The beauty of it besides the taste is it comes in a resealable bag. The thing I hate about 5lb containers is even when you are almost done with the whey the container is still a bitch to take with you. I am on the road all day so I take my protein with me. The bag gets smaller as you use it and the seal keeps it fresh. They use Hersheys Dutch cocoa to flavor it and it mixes well with a shaker. The Prolab never mixed well for me unless I had a blender and didn't come close to tasting like the big whey.

Something that is almost always forgotten when people start taking in high amounts of protein supplements in that you need to also take in a fiber such as fibercon or metamucil some time during the day. You wouldn't believe how many people have had bowel blockages because of massive protein intake without also making sure that stuff gets out of you just the same.
Be safe and lift hard.
