Before you buy the new one - ask yourself - do you want it or do you need it?

Are you buying this new car just to show it off? Just to feel good about yourself? To impress yourself and others?

Be honest! I think you are.....just because you have the money for it doesn't make it a good idea.

35K - the price of the IS w/options - I looked at it too - could be 300K when you're 30. I'm the same way as you and about the same age. I have money now and I wanted to go out and buy a new car, new clothes, etc. Then it hit me....what a monster waste that would be.

So many better things you could do - buy some real estate - buy a house...buy something that is going to INCREASE in value rather than decrease.

If you insist, I would go with the BMW M3. Way better ride than the IS.

I personally have a 2000 323CI BMW with the sports and the premium packages. Its so me. Any who, if you got 50,000 for the M3 then its all you, the thing about the M3 is that they arent even in the states yet and the waiting list is long, I am like #110 or some shit. You cant go wrong with a BMW.

Matt-
true, true...
I really want a more "grown-up" (for lack of better words) car, as I am opening a biz and might need something more than my "pocket car"! I have read reviews of the IS, and it seems to be compared to the 3-series most often. It would definately be nice to have an M3, nothing beats a chocolate-rocket! Now, however, you've got me thinking on the "do I really need a new car" side of the coin...i'm definately not going to rush into buying without thinking it through!

Blondie -

There is no comparison between the M3 and the IS. It's a different world.

What you could do - I would recommend - is get an M3 just off of a 2 year lease. Then you're looking at no more than 30K miles on it, and about $22-27,000 depending on the year.

The car is still a "baby" - all the maintenance was likely done because during leases the dealer often pays for it - maintenance is included.

Also, depreciation of cars happens as soon as they drie off the lot. So buy one that is virtually new (30K miles is NOTHING) and that has already dropped in value.

They have all kinds of warranties on the "certified pre owned". It is NEVER a good idea to buy something that will drop precipitously in value.

New 2001 Chevy Suburban. Black, mags, 17" wheels, Z71 Package, new 8.3 litre engine. Nice, nice, nice. But that is just my dream.

Would you buy stock worth 30,000 if you knew it would drop to 18,000 in two years? I hope not, or you won't be in business to long. If loss is inevitable, (and it is with cars) minimize it.

Also - look on the Net and see if you can go to any auctions. I've been to a few just to observe and I saw a guy pay 40,000 for a 300,000 Lamborghini.

A car is the worst investment you can make. Without a doubt. I've been scoping auctions around in Pa/De/Md areas and the deal are amazing.

A wise man once said that a good investment is to buy the most expensive house you can afford and the least expensive car you can deal with.

The former appreciates in value and the latter depreciates in value.

Look for one a year or two old with low miles and you could save yourself over 1/2 of what the new cost was.
Thats what I do. I'll never buy a new one unless its a lease.

I'm gonna buy a 98 M3 in either Royal blue or black come Spring time. They can be found for around 25K in good condition if you look around a little bit.

If you're single, get an IS.

If you're not, a 1982 Chevy IMPALA will do.
